hi, apologies for yet another e2 question although this is more of a direct situation.
i remember in the good old days when you could just come to korea on 'holiday', find a job then get the proper visa. i wonder if its the same. heres the situation.
a canadian who has already completed one year in korea wants to return in a couple of months. she has all the documentation, crim check etc. basically can she come to korea without a job, find one here and get the legal paperwork without having to go back to canada.
again, sorry if its been posted before but nothing came out on the search.many thanks, guys. |

You still need to get the interview at the consulate in the home country. |

Yet I read that immigration decided against the interviews, with the exceptions of "suspicious" applicants. |

It varies from consulate to consulate, too. One consulate in the USA is willing to forego in person interviews and just conduct the interviews over the telephone. Another consulate is demanding in person interviews.
So much seems to vary as to which consular official you are dealing with. But at present, it looks like she'll have to go back to Canada. |

Man, everyone is saying something different.
I understood that the interviews are only for first timers. If you already had a visa before you wouldn't need an interview. |

My understanding is that a consular interview will be required, if and only if you have not had an E-2 visa issued by the consulate in your home country prior to the changes. So if you've always done visa-runs to japan, they might well require an interview in your home country....if you've gotten a visa for the consulate which you'd need to interview with, you shouldn't need to interview with them, and should be free to do a japan-run |

so the question is: did ur friend apply to the Korean consulate in cda prior to working her first year? or was she in korea and then do a visa run before her first year of employment here?
To be sure, nobody really knows the real requirements as their has been much confusion on the subject. I also understood the situation to be the same as stated by Norith. However, the consulate itself in cda (montreal and toronto websites--couldn't access ottawa or vancouver sites) does not make any such distinctions of having worked in korea with an E2 before and suggests all applicants must pass an interview with a consul.
So, best advice is to have ur friend phone the consulate in her area and pose the question......even then, best of luck. |

more info here that mentions having held an E2:
http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/world/embassies/korea/embassy-newsletter-en.asp
-->3) The first E-2 visa application has to be made in Canada only with all other necessary documents including the above two requirements and an interview with a Korean consul is required.
4) Those already in Korea with an E-1, E-2, E-3 and whose degrees or transcripts have been verified by the Korea Academic Verification Agency (KAVA: recognized by Korean immigration authority) can extend or renew their visas without leaving the country and without an interview. |
