Quote:
HAYDEN, Idaho (AP) -- A man who believed he bore the "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to amputate one of his hands, cooked it in a microwave and summoned authorities, Kootenai County sheriff's deputies say.

The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when deputies arrived at his home in this north Idaho town Saturday afternoon, and neither he nor the severed hand bore any noticeable tattoo or other mark, sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger.

"It had been somewhat cooked by the time the deputy arrived," Wolfinger said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, where he and the hand were taken by ambulance. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Johnson would not say whether an attempt was made to reattach the hand, citing patient confidentiality restrictions.

"He put a tourniquet on his arm before, so he didn't bleed to death," Wolfinger said. "That kind of mental illness is just sad."

The New Testament book of Revelation contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying, according to the New International Version of the Bible, "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury."

The book of Matthew also contains the passage, "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."

Wolfinger said he didn't know which hand was amputated.

another example of why religion is for idiots who are all too ready to forfeit their rational thinking skills and those who manipulate such.

I still don't see how so many people still use the bible as a way of life. Considering that it has been interpreted in so many ways, and it is constantly changing, it's crazy. People of the same church don't even agree on everything with their clergy (or whatever), let alone the same denominations or religion. Peoples' views of how it is to be taken have changed countless times and yet people still think what they think now is the exact way it should be taken. And how in the heck do people decide that some stuff is to be taken literally, but other stuff should be interpreted in a different way, and worse some stuff should just be left out? If people still followed the first bible to a T, I might have respect for them, though I wouldn't follow it. But seriously, think about it.

I am not arguing against there being a God, I can't possibly know if there is or not. I have no problem with people living by morals they think are right and don't harm the greater good of society or individual rights or believing in a God. I think I might believe in something myself. But basing your entire life on a book written 2000 years ago that you don't even actually follow correctly, but twist to suit your needs is ignorant.

The OPs story is an extreme example, but a good one.

I actually feel really sorry for this guy. Someone very close to me tried to commit suicide and was also inspired by the bible. Obviously he had a mental illness(schizophrenia apparently) and the bible was the outlet. Seems like this was a similar case. Mental illness is an issue that seems to be swept under the rug alot. I hope this guy gets better with the helpm of medication.

Greek symbols for 666, used by religious mystics nearly 2000 years ago, were uncovered in 1964. The discovery was largely ignored, because of the cryptic nature of the symbols. In 1964, they were also incorrectly read as MMM. In 1982, after further interpretation of the text, it was discovered that the letters were purposely written upside down, in reference to the evil the symbols represented: WWW

Hitchens:

Quote:
Ask yourself if you really think it was true that there was (is) a celestial dictatorship that watched over you from the moment you were born (actually, from the moment you were conceived), all through life, night and day, knew your thoughts, waking and sleeping, could in fact convict you of thought crime the absolute definition of a dictatorship (can convict you for what you think, for what you privately want), that monitors you like this, under permanent surveillance and control and supervision..and, doesnt even let go of you when youre dead, because thats when the real fun begins. My question is this: who wishes that that were true? Who wants to live the life of a serf in a celestial North Korea?

However, in North Korea, they dont threaten to follow you after youre dead, you can leave North Korea and get out of their hell by dying. Out of the Christian and Muslim one, you cannot.
