Has any Americans out there come to work in Busan since the new immigration rules have gone into effect? My reason for asking is that I'm wondering if I should get my criminal background apostillized like the immigration website says or if Busan immigration will be fine with just the local police's backgound check. Thanks.

A person on this forum who seems very knowledgeable sent me the following as PM. (I am from California).

Well, the California state background check requires fingerprint submission. That's more than what Immigration requires, though.

According to the Korean Immigration official's article in the Korea Times, an online check is acceptable. I don't know what site you used, but he specifically mentions http://www.criminalbackgroundrecords.com in his article.

Since you're in Korea, what you'd need to do is take the printout of the online check it to the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. There, you'll execute and sign a declaration before a consular official, something like:
Quote:
The attached document is my true and accurate criminal record check, obtained from (agency) on (date)

The embassy officials may be able to suggest the appropriate language. They will notarize the declaration, at a cost of $30. The consular notarization serves in place of an apostille to authenticate the check. Here are some links for more information:

http://seoul.usembassy.gov/notarial_services.html (info on the U.S. Embassy's notarial services for U.S. citizens; you'll be executing an affidavit (declaration) under oath).

Hope this helps!
