Does anyone know if they are selling portable HDDs in the neighborhood of 500GB in Yongsan? The largest I've seen (HDD and case) is 250GB. I would love to purchase a TB but not sure they're available in "portable" form as of yet.

3.5 for about 125,000 at 500gb (lowest price) are available. 2.5 up to 160gb for about the same price.

A TB would be portable only if you carry it in a smallish backback...expensive as well.

By an external case for 30,000 to 40,000 and then by a 500gb drive and put it in. Voila!

I did this back in July and then when I bought my new computer I moved the drive into that one and the case is sitting empty until I decide that 1.5tb is not enough and I need more storage.

Will most cases support a drive that size, or is there a certain kind I need to get? It looks like the 3.5 drives aren't able to be powered by USB-only, unless I'm mistaken... Confused

external 3.5 cases come with a plug so they will run off of electricity from the wall rather than usb power.

The biggest 2.5" drive I see is a 320GB Western Digital for 225,000 won. That's pretty steep considering a 3.5" 500GB is only 100,000 or even less!

Throw in a cheapo case for about 10,000 and that's a drive for under 250,000.

Not sure about the quality of the brands, but it would seem that 1 TB drives are available in 3.5" designs. Price seems to range from about 300,000 - 350,000 won.

Of course, the Buffalo brand names does NOT seem portable. Wink (not to mention a tad overpriced!)

But the other ones certainly seem portable enough. 2.5 inch would be nice, but 3.5 's not bad for 1 TB IMO....

*Edited to fix link*

Thanks for that! So I guess the best we can hope for at this time is a 320 GB--still quite a step up from the 40GB standard of just a couple of years ago!

Ditto on buying the case and hard drive separately. Easy to put together and Ubuntu detected it right away. I built both an 80 gig and a 500 gig by buying components separately and putting it together myself.

Costco is selling 1Tb drives in the low 300,000 W range.

Buying 500Gb drives and cases is easy. I arrived here with a 320Gb and bought a 500Gb not long after I got here. I will send all my photos, music and other files backed up on the 320 to Australia next week. When I get back I will buy another smaller drive to do that again next year. I have more photos and music than can fit on my laptop and am not going to have only one copy.

I usually keep the smaller drive hidden away, so if my computer stuff gets cleared out I still have a fairly recent copy. Losing your photos sucks.

Yes, but you're not talking about the USB-powered / 2.5" ones are you? Confused I myself have a 500 GB external drive but it requires AC power.
