yeah I assumed it would be for many non-kiwis. But it's big deal here in New Zealand and this will likely be the biggest NZ funeral in modern times.

Sir Ed was a legend, a hero and a great man.

He will be sorely missed but his memory will never be forgotten.

Sir Edmond Hillary has died - aged 88. A very sad day for New Zealand.

To my generation, Ed Hillary epitomised the Kiwi gentleman: always adventurous - kind, warm spirited, well mannered - and above all - honest. What a man, what a life, and what a legacy.

Ed Hillary will always be remembered fondly for his conquest of Everest - and how his family subsequently repaid their debt to the Nepalese people by building schools and operating charitable trusts. And, sadly, how Ed tragicly lost his family while doing this.

But Ed Hillary's legacy is so much more than his Everest expedition. His adventure books inspired generations of Kiwis (including myself) to travel and seek adventure.

While I traveled the sub-continent I recalled his accounts of the Sadu Men (measuring their lengths) as he jetboated to the source of the Ganges. And I'll never forget how seeing the little red tractor he used in his Antartic expedition spurred my own global travels.

Ed was an adventurer of the highest order - who else would have biked from Christchurch to Wanaka to climb their first mountain (using only old ropes and a parka).

Thanks Ed. The world is a poorer place without you. RIP.

I'm an Aussie, but lived and worked in NZ for three years. Many people outside of NZ may not realise how much this man meant to the NZ psyche. Anyway, he was not just a great Kiwi, but a great human being. No doubt, imperfect, as all those labled "hero" are, but still a great man. This kind of thing is a turning point in the development of a national psyche. I can only compare it to the passing of cricketer Sir Donald Bradman in Australia, a man who also epitomised a previous era, and formed a deep part of the national psyche. When the tears dry, you will realise it is more than just one man that has died. It is a recognition that an era has passed. A period of mourning is necessary for all these reasons.

Sound like a nice guy.

Is it true that he also was an actor on a USA TV show?
