There are urban legends, fictitious rumors that gain the patina of truth over time, and there are true, but incredible coincidences. The later are sometimes described as synchronicity.

Synchronicity is defined as: the coincidental occurrence of events and especially psychic events (as similar thoughts in widely separated persons or a mental image of an unexpected event before it happens) that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality used especially in the psychology of C. G. Jung

More specifically, synchronicity usually involves a coincidence of events that seems to have special personal significance to the participants.

My favorite example of synchronicity is one often found listed under urban legends, the coat worn by the Wizard of Oz in the movie. Here is how it is described on IMDB:

Quote:
According to legend, the coat Frank Morgan wore as Professor Marvel, which was handpicked from a second-hand clothing rack, once belonged to Oz author L. Frank Baum. The inside pocket had his initials on it. After completion of the film, the coat was presented to Baum's widow who confirmed it was indeed his.

Here is what I found when researching this on a site devoted to finding the truth about urban legends:

So the story, while hard to believe, is true.

Another curious thing is how Frank Morgan resembles the author, L. Frank Baum:

Anyone want to share other interesting examples of synchronicity?

Yeah my mums into all that jazz (although more on a spiritual level)

I thought it was pretty lame... anyway..

I wanted to buy a car. It was a specific type. Late 80,s Honda Civic.

but i could only afford $3000. At that time they were selling around $5000.

my mum said... use the force luke... and imagine it will happen... I rolled my eyes and said ok.... so I tried to imagine driving my car and having spent $3k.

Funny thing was... 2 days later I went to my PT job and my bosses wife pulled up in none other then a 88 Honda Civic...

'Nice car' I say...
'Thanks, im trying to sell it' she replied.
Really? I want to buy one... how much your selling it for?
$3000 she says.
Ok Ill buy it. thanks... niceuhhh...

hehe thanks mum! Strange but true.. (cue twilight zone music..)

I saw it broken down mathematically. You have about half a million distinct events happen to you every year. Something that's 1 in a million is going to happen to you twice a year.

Once I was thinking I haven't seen an ex coworker in a long time. And I was listening to a podcast about coincidences. And then I saw my coworker right after listening to the podcast on coincidences.

I always wanted to write a book called "This one is going to sell big", a book about self fulfilling prophecies. Surely destined for a top rank on Amazon.
