I bought a cheap metal detector last fall because I've always wanted to try my hand at it. I went to Mallipo Beach a few times but always found far more soju bottle caps than money. But truthfully, I didn't care because Mallipo is very scenic (used to be, anyway!). It was a fun day with a friend and I got some sun, fresh air and a bit of exercise.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone was interested in doing some metal detecting in Korea? Maybe plan road trips somewhere and do some weekends this spring and summer? I haven't seen much in Korea about it, but it seems like it might be a fun get together once in a while. Anyone interested?

Might have to check local laws and such to make sure you're not breaking any laws, but I don't think it'd be too hard to find out. I'd love to check some old abandoned Korean houses and Korean war sites........but like I said, got to make sure it's legal. I do know of a guy who found a big bottle of old coins hidden in an abandoned hootch once, but he wasn't metal detecting, just scavenging. Opinions?

Interested but I still don't know if I will be leaving in May, and I'm in Busan. If I were to find a cheap metal detector here I might give it a go but I'm not sure about a road trip with a bunch of foreigners with metal detectors would make us feel like we are fitting in Laughing

I'm not in Korea yet, but I am interested in metal detecting. I'll be in the Gangjin region.

I've given it some thought since I'm big into military history and so
tempted to go over old Korean war battle sites BUT I think there
may be legal issues as well as P.O.ed Koreans seeing a white
guy diggen holes in the sacred land. There's an ancient hollowed
out stone square bin partially buried near my apartment. I was try'n
to remove some of the soil around the edges with my bare hands
and I look up and sure 'nuff I was get'n the evil eye from an
adjossi. I was just curious but I got the hint.

Another problem is running into and digging up unexploded ordinance
from the war. You may lose a limb or life if you're not careful. I
was working on a military installation that was closing up with retirees
work'n the fields with their metal detectors when one discovered an
old WW2 pineapple grenade. EOD was called in and metal detectors
were prohibited from then on.
