Hello, all. I'm a complete newbie to both this forum and to Korea itself, so I need some advice with things like, well, knowing how to find almost anything. But particularly I'm hoping somebody might have a lead on illustration classes - I've not been drawing for many a year, but I'd like to get back into it, and I think I do better with things in a classroom setting (higher motivation, for a start).

So. Does anyone know where to go for this kind of thing? I know Korea is big for animation and even comics and things, so they must exist - but is there anything foreigner-friendly? Bonus for being in or near Gangseo-gu, which nothing is.

Thanks!

I've seen posters up for those sorts of courses/hagwons down here in Busan. I'm not sure about Seoul or if they would be foreigner friendly. What sort of work did you do?

Keep searching, ask some Koreans you know about it. They must exist. In the meantime though you could pick up some how-to books and refresh your basic skills (that's what I've been up to lately).

I'm mainly interested in comic art (I'm writing comics, and the artist I had on board flaked on me - it may be best to do things myself), but I need some serious refresher work. Especially on character design, consistency, and software (know nothing about Photoshop or Manga Studio, for example).

I've never seen anything close to that in Seoul... not in english anyway. There's the "Animation museum" near Meyong-dong that you could try, but the closest I've gotten to it is driving by (is that where the Simpsons is made?).

Personally, I'd join http://www.deviantart.com/ and hunt down tutorials there. Worst case, you just use vids for awhile to help ya.

Soul's a big art/comics/animation town. They animate the Simpsons there. I know the New York Film School does seasonal seminars there, but they're heavy duty multi-week immersion courses that would probably interfere with your job.

Finding good classes in English might be challenging, but I know the larger universities in Seoul offer some courses taught entirely in English--- what subjects I couldn't say. Might wanna try the Hongdae area--- it's considered to be Seoul's art district. Hongdae's a fun place to hang out in general--- if you find yourself at one of the dance clubs or coffee houses, it wouldn't hurt to just ask around to a few of the Korean students you meet. A lot of artists seem to hang out at the Seoul Pub just outside of Itaewon station as well, and I know one of the part time bartenders is a professional animator for her other full-time job. Not sure if she still works there though, haven't spotted her the last few times I was there... Good place to get advice on that though.
