My F-4 visa is expiring early May - I'm wondering if anyone knows if I have to go all the way to Mokdong to renew it even though I'm only staying til the end of the month and if I don't, what the consequences are. I hate going to that office! Do I have to get some type of temporary visa if I don't want to renew the F-4?

If you are leaving at the end of THIS month (and for good), then don't bother renewing it. At immigration, turn in your alien registration card and say you will not return to Korea.

Just renew it. I think all they do is collect the money and put a stamp on the back. Its worth it because that F4 is also a multiple entry visa. Plus, you only gotta renew it once every 2 years. Just get it stamped here before you leave and then back home take a trip to the nearest Korean consulate once every 2 years to keep it going.

If it does expire, I'm not sure whether you have to apply for a new F4 or if they simply renew your old one. Someone else will have to answer that.

I left Korea in 2003 and turned my alien registration card at immigration. When I returned a couple of years later, I had no trouble getting my F-4 again, though an immigration officer told me I was lucky to get one because of the furor over singer Lee Seung-joon's dodging of the draft.

Again, if you are leaving Korea for good, don't bother renewing it. If you come back, you shouldn't have a problem getting it again.

Just curious -- when you are leaving Korea for good, do you turn in your alien registration card at the immigration office in the airport, or do you turn it in at the immigration kiosk you pass through after you're already airside?

You turn it in to the official who stamps your passport.

Ok, in that case, yes, you will be fined for overstaying your visa. You can ask immigration for an extension but they'll probably give you two weeks max.
