Convicts, right. Good, now that is out of the road, back to the more serious stuff, getting a criminal record check for Australians wanting to work in the ESL industry in South Korea.

I am in the process of doing this, and will explain what I think works, though I still have to get it in my hands.

Go to the AFP website here

http://www.afp.gov.au/business/national_police_checks.html

and download the form, and fill it out. You will need to supply them with a copy of your passport page and a list of addresses for the last 10 years.

Send that off to the AFP at the address supplied in the printout with some form of international money order. I sent mine to my agent in Australia (my long suffering mother) and she added the cash and sent it off to them.

But you do need an agent at some time, because that agent needs to take it to an Apostille agent, there is one in every capital city in Australia. You can see their website here

http://www.apostille.com.au/

They will look at the document and confirm the details with the APF by phone, and apostille the document. Get your agent to send it back to you. I will be out of the country by then, so I am getting my mother to send it directly to the agent.

Fingers crossed, but it seems like it will work.

The AFP check works fairly flawlessly. I find that they're incredibly slow unless you keep at them to process the application.

If, however, there is an error or omission in the paperwork, they'll send it back and you'll have to go through everything again. This happened to me when I didn't fill out the page granting them permission to forward the report to a third party. It wasn't being sent to anyone, other than me, as was clearly outlined in the letter I attached to the application. That section was completely unnecessary. I suggest filling it out anyway, just to save the hassle.

Thankfully, I didn't have to go through the apostille process!

$198
Shocked

Shit, mate.

So Alexander are you just going with the AFP check & not following up with the apostille check/confirmation?
I'm currently getting all my paperwork in order & if I don't have to pay that $198 I won't!
I was under the impression though that it was mandatory for yr criminal check to be accepted in Korea.

It may be. I really don't know.

I'm going with EPIK. Apostilles are not required. That, like everything else, it seems, is probably open to change on a whim. At this stage, however, I'm in the clear. On month and counting!

From my mother today....

Overworked mother wrote:

Guess what I have found there is an Apostille service here in Adelaide at the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I can take the document in to them, they check their database for the signature of the AFP person who has signed the document if they have it on record they only charge $60 and will post the document off to me the next day if they don't they have to chase it up and it will cost $80.
Sounds much cheaper than the guy in Sydney ($198)

Groovy - it's getting cheaper & cheaper! Very Happy

I live in Darwin so all of this stuff has to be done over the net, there are no embassies or anything up this way.

Thanks for the links & info. Much appreciated!

Just out of interest have the other Aussies here got the apostille check as well as the federal one?

The AFP guys told me on the phone that the embassy in Seoul would do it, but when I rang them, they said they wouldn't. IIRC the embassies are run under DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). Idiots.

Just to make sure it is clear, my record check is still a work in progress. The paperwork has been sent to the AFP.... lots to go before this is a method that has succeeded....

I just sent my documents to the AFP this week.

Is there no way I can then send the returned documents to DFAT by post? Or do I have to get someone to do it for me?

I recieved my national record check (name only- no fingerprints) from the AFP today. It took eight days.

Does anyone know if DFAT requires it to be stamped by a notary pulic before the apostille is attached?

I've just applied for a National Police Certificate from the WA Police. Its return time is 3-5 days and apparently it's a check of all Australian police jurisdictions and apparently the Korean Embassy will accept this for an E2 application.

I'm hoping the Embassy staff are more sure of their answers than, say, the average idiot giving directions on a Korean street. I'll post updates as everything falls apart.

Laughing

I did the same Yexey & just got a national check from the local NT police.

It's the regular check that teachers need to get to enable them to work with kids, so I can't imagine in what way it would be unacceptable for the E-2.

But you never know.....

Do we have to get an apositlle verification?

I read on the Australian Embassy website that they can confirm the authenticity of Australian government documents.

Isn't that enough for Immigration?
