|
|
I am going to try to be back in Seoul by this Sept, but come 2009 I will have to start writing my thesis.
I am looking at trying to get either a uni or public school job. Obviously getting a uni job will give me the most time, but I am going to be in the states applying for positions. I know that sometimes they will conduct interviews via webcam or conference call, but interviews in person are so important.
Will I have enough free time if I get a job at a public school?
From the posts I am reading, PS seems to be more of an easy job, especially elementary school, with all the breaks and whatnot.
Last year I worked in a great hagwon, but I worked Mon-Sat from 2:30-10:30, so I am definitely trying to stay away from those hours. Basically, I just want a job where I won't be exhausted nights and weekends!
Any suggestions? Thanks |

If you work at a public school ,you should have more then enough time to complete your thesis. Keep in mind , that for approx. 6 weeks in the summer and six weeks in the winter ,you do nothing but sit in a library .This is duirng the summer and winter vacations. |

Some sit there for those periods, some don't. Not all ps administrators are so heartless that they require their waygukkin charges to hang around for all that time when there are no students present. But maybe you'll want to find one who does require that so that you will feel encouraged to spend the vacation time writing your thesis.
But even during the regular school term, you have to be there 40 hrs. a week even though you're only teaching 22 max. (with no grading and no testing to do). So, that might be a good situation for you to bring your own laptop to school and write away. |

Not me, I had camp. But I agree, public schools will probably give you lots of time. |

Thanks for the responses!
I actually just spoke to a recruiter who said she could get me into a Gangnam high school. I told her my specific situation and then she said she could get a me a public school job with less hours and more vacation time.
Is that BS, or does a public job like that exist? |

From what I have seen, high schools do seem to have the least amount of camps during vacations... If you are writing a thesis, it probably doesn't matter if you have to do it in the school library so whether it is vacation or just no classes you should be fine.... As for less hours, only count on what is in the contracts... From my experience, Gangnam public schools do tend to treat their teachers a bit better (it's all the extra money they have to throw around)... Just don't go elementary, that's where you are likely to get stuck with camps during the break... |

I wasn't aware you could get a full time job in middle or high school. Last time I was job hunting I looked and only found elementary on all the job boards.
For future reference, where does one find middle and high school work? |

Thanks! Good advice!
What are the differences of teaching elementary vs. middle vs. high school?
I heard that for SMOE elementary, you teach two pages of a book a week, and you don't do a lot of work. Are foreign teachers teaching more in middle/high school? |

Come on; Jesus doesn't have nearly enough time to write my thesis for me. That's ridiculous. |

At high school we have a lot of classes canceled for tests, mock tests, and such. I think for that reason alone you'd be best off in a high school. However, yeah the classes are 50 minutes in length, 45 at middle, and 40 at elementary. |
