Was this guy drunk when he wrote this or does this paper frequently publish articles like this?

http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200808/200808140016.html

South Korea, one of the poorest countries on earth in 1948 when it was founded, has achieved miraculous growth in 60 years. Having become the world's 13th-largest economy through industrialization and democratization, the republic is rushing to join the ranks of advanced countries. What has made that great leap possible? To mark the 60th anniversary of Liberation Day on Friday, the Chosun Ilbo selected six secrets to South Korea's success....

3) Hope and Courage

Not one of the past 60 years was without a crisis. But Koreans have overcome all of them. Some have even said that Koreans have special genes that always turn misfortune into fortune.

Another gem...

4) High Spirits

Since the 1960s Koreans freed themselves of fatalism and burned with a "can-do" spirit. The results in turn fueled self-confidence, and that produced greater enthusiasm. The enthusiastic, free and engaging Korean temperament, once freed from grievances, became a tremendous potential. "You can do it if you try" was a specific and practical expression of high spirits, an almost mystic prophesy of self-realization.

You will find this here and there among Koreans. A belief that their distinctiveness is to such an extent that they even have genetic differences from the rest of human-kind. My boss, a PHD holder and head of the languages dept in a famous high school kinda believes some of this.

They like to sweep the billions of dollars simply given to them mostly by the States and a few other countries under the rug.

But nobody will posit a general theory as to why they are so f*ckin crap at football, rugby and empathising with wider humanity.

Fast-fast culture has hurt them, not helped.

And leadership? Give me a break.

Yep Korea sure did advance very quickly throughout the 60's 70's and 80's. However ask people who are honest and forthright and they'll tell you that since the financial crisis, things have been going backwards for the past 10 years, and it looks like that trend will continue. (not just in Korea)

The reporter is just another moron who is an embarrasement to Korea.

"Koreans, though they appear to extremely individualistic..."

I have never heard anyone describe Koreans as being individualistic!

Wow... it's like every day these news reporters come up with new ways to not surprise me. First it was how horrible, dirty and evil foreigners are, then it was how superior Koreans are! What could possibly be next??? How beautiful, clean and pure Koreans are? Or maybe how inferior foreigners are??? I just can't wait!!!

I think this article is meant to be read after you drink a few glasses of soju and then you are supposed to laugh like crazy and smoke a cigar and say you agree, and that he's a total genius. How many vodka drinks does it take to make that stuff readable? Korea sure did achieve a lot. I will say that. However, the US saved Korea from being occupied by North Korea and Park Chung Hee was Japanese in thinking, and he built Korea. Of course, Koreans worked hard, and Korea didn't have the same corruption as the Phillipines. Otherwise, the Phillipines would be in the same position, but Marcos really messed up that country.

The reason why newspapers write cr*p like that is because it works. Most Korean readers would read that and consider it true without questioning. Fan death, mad cow, and whatnot; they all have started by the media.

More total garbage from the Korean media. As mentioned, Koreans eat that stuff up like it was gourmet food. Foreigners know better.

Totally delusional comes to mind.

Now that the whiners have had their say... I notice that they have not explained the difference between Korea in 1945 and 2008? A good many countries benefited from US aid and trade after WWII. It wasn't just Korea. You don't hear them praising the US either. What you do hear is how the US only helped out because it was for the private benefit of the US. How often do you hear a Canadian saying, "Thank you" for buying their products, or for the US establishing US companies there giving jobs to Canadians? You don't hear Australians and New Zealanders of the younger generation saying, 'Whew, thanks US for winning the Battle of the Coral Sea and saving our bacon".

Why can't Korea celebrate its Independence Day without dysfunctional waygookins whining?

There's nothing magical about it. All these countries started getting richer because costs in the US was too high and it started getting outsourced.
