How many of you can sit like most koreans can? With your buttocks on your heals and your heals flat on the ground; knees close together and right up by your shoulders.

No half sitters or high heeled/big heeled cheaters please.

Easily.. its extremely comfortable as well.. but makes you look really goofy.. so I don't do it.

Well, but not as rigidly and specific as you describe.. thats rare and not as comfortable.. but more giving your legs a break from standing and squat like that..

But regardless still makes you look goofy so I don't do it.

Hahaha

My friends and I call it the Korean Squat.

Just a matter of flexibility. I can't do it anymore, but I'm sure you can assume the position after a few weeks of trying.

:)

Why do Koreans do this I often ask myself. It looks like they are preceeding to use the toilet!

Most often, the Korean males do it.

You will often see western toddlers do this as well. When I was home I noticed it a lot. It is comfortable and I dont' think you look silly if you do it.

Anyhow, I know longer have the flexibility to do this.

One of the first things I learned to do upon coming to Korea was the squat (the second thing was to count money like a Korean).

And KK, it does look silly.

Ya, it does look silly but is in no way difficult for me. I find I prefer to squat up on the balls of my feet though rather than flat footed. I actually can't imagine how the average 20-45 year old westerner would be too inflexible to do this. (barring an arthritic condition or something)

Doing the squat, flat footed is bloody hard. I think there's some lacking flexibility in the achilles and calves to have the necessary lean forward.

Otherwise, your centre of gravity is too behind your hips and you just fall over backwards. :)

Rather clumsily I might add. :)

Hmmmm....strange....

I can do it no problem. I often do it while talking to the little kids at work.

Works for me. Not sure where the flexibility really becomes an issue for people.....

I have no problem with it generally, got used to it using the old squatters, ~ in fact so much so, that I generally would rather use a squat toilet than the throne..if they were clean.
