anyone know if it is possible/easy to open a bank account with HSBC here in Korea? I want to open a bank account with an international bank that will give me a visa debit card that works globally. any other input in opening an account at an international bank that easily provides a visa or mastercard debit card would be greatly appreciated.....thanks

Not easy, you need around 10 million won (or something like that) to open a personal account as a non-Korean citizen...same goes for HSBC branches in other Asian countries. Easiest way to do it is to set up an HSBC account in your home country online and have the papers/cards shipped to an address there, then forwarded on to you here in Korea.

I've read that Standard Chartered Bank is issuing these cards. Can anyone still attest to this?

Quote:
The initial deposit to open multi-currency saving account is USD 1,000 equivalent., and term deposits is USD 5,000 equivalent.
There is no fee for the account to open or deposit and no minimum balance required.
However, 1% of cash commission will be charged when you make withdrawal by foreign currency cash from the account. Also, only 5 currencies
such as KRW, USD, JPY(Japanese Yen), HKD, and GBP(Pound sterling) are available in HSBC Korea. Other currencies such as NZD are available only by telegraphic transfer.
In order to make the account with us, you need to bring your passport, alien registration card and the required minimum initial deposit . If 1% of cash commission is the burden too heavy for you, I would like to recommend that you open a saving account with KEB. There is no fee to withdraw foreign currency cash from the account. Even thought there are some HSBC branches in Korea, their systems are not connected with other systems thet other country HSBC have.
The requirements for opening an account are the passport, alien registration card and initial deposit of USD1,000$ or equivalent money in KRW.
In order to make the account with us, please visit one of our branches.

Anyone care to tranlate this?

I easily opened an account and got an international ATM card at HSBC Singapore even though I told them I was unemployed and not a resident of Singapore.

At HSBC Korea, I brought along my passport, work visa and alien residency card, but was informed that only Koreans can bank at HSBC Korea.

Yes. I opened an account there a couple of months ago and got a card, no problem. I have been able to withdraw funds from my SC account in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and... wait, I didn't try in Singapore earlier this week. Anyway, it works.

yeah, i just went to Citibank today to try to open an account, and they told me I couldn't. Didn't want to argue or ask them to explain why because of the language difficulty between me and the employees there at the moment. Anyways, I like the idea of opening the account online at a HSBC in the states. Thanks for the suggestion Bilbo202.

btw, does anyone know anything about investing in mutual funds with a Swiss company. I want to invest a little $$, but i am particularly interested in setting up an account with a company like T.Rowe or Vanguard, but not American. Swiss.
