The ct dropped a bomb on me today as he was giving me a ride home. Apparently he and several other teachers are being forced out by the principal. The new principal came 1 week after I started. He "appears" to be foreigner friendly but I know it's not true. He "appears" friendly and polite to me but his attitude and demeanor suggests that he's HIGHLY xenophobic. I know for a fact that he's quite unhappy with me being the Native Teacher there because I'm American yet not "White."
He's forcing out MANY teachers & the vp! I'm at my 6th month mark. I plan on staying in Korea for at least 1 more year..and possibly even at the same school. However upon hearing this news, I know for certain the principal will not ask me to renew.
Sorry for the semi rant. Anyone getting a new ct? I can't believe this is the last week that I'll be seeing my ct. We initially got off to a rough start and had some minor miscommunication here and there but he was a great man. *sighs* I can't even fathom or imagine what my future ct will be like. waaaahhhhh |

Sorry to hear about that. I too am expecting a number of teachers from my high school to fly the coop or be forced out. The principal in my case likes me, but he definitely doesn't like all of the Korean teachers in the school. Too bad since they are not all that difficult to work with. Guess it has much to do with setting the tone for their particular style of leadership. Nevertheless, it is a shock when you find out someone is on the way out. I hope you get a good replacement teacher.  |

Yea unfortunately the Korean teachers that are being forced out are the ones I like & can work with! They are the ones that show up to class and friggin' actually translates & offers input on my teaching instead of sitting back and reading a newspaper.
My ct mentioned something about the principal wanting a new team of leadership and "thinking." grrrrr I just got back from vacation...too angry right now. I need to step out and get a burger. |

| i'm getting a new principal next week.... i wonder if he'll be making any changes to the staff. does anyone know if it's usual for new principals to do this sort of thing? |

I think so. I know the office politics that floats around the school and know that the teachers that are being forced out are all disliked by the principal. Basically the principal wants a buncha yes-men. If any teacher has a different perspective than his, he can count on being forced out sooner or later.
All the butt kissers and brown nosers are staying..what a surprise. |

Both my co-teachers are leaving.
It's their time to change schools. I think they've been here for three years.
One of my current co-teachers knows one of the new teachers coming and says her English is very good. That's a plus  |

Teachers stay at a school for 5 years and then get moved to a new school.
We change about 20% of our teaching staff each year in our school and the other schools in our district.
7 teachers changed last year and we are changing 8 this year.
2008/9 will be the last year for my co-teacher here and then he will have to change schools. |

Well, 5 years is, typically, the maximum a Korean teacher can stay at one school.
Obviously, if things aren't looking good at one location, they aren't forced to stay there. |

ttompatz is right. A principal and VP will stay at a school for four years, teachers five. BUT, they are allowed an extra year if the Office of Education grants it to them for any reason.
My excellent co-teachers are around till next February before moving on, so I'll re-sign for one more year, and will miss working with them for 6 months as my contract finishes in June. My excellent principal has only been at my school for a year so he's got a while left. Decisions!
I teach at three other schools and my co-teachers have only been there for, at most, a couple of years. |
