I have some serious wanderlust in me and it's been that way for years. I'm pretty sure most of you on this board are the same way.

Anyways, for those who have taught or are teaching, what is the realistic possibilty of escaping xenophobic Korea for a few days during national holidays and/or vacation time?

Let's take these destinations:

Japan
China
India <--- Let me in on this one.
Thailand

Also, with returning home form Korea. Could I take the plane ticket money and go travel for a bit afterwards?

I've just been thinking about this a lot and couldn't find any real answers in ESL Cafe.

Thanks!

Hi, Having been in Korea for 3.5yrs and recently left I am loving the holidays at home in NZ now..... In korea holiday time is jam packed, roads are nuts with traffic and the price of tickets and availability of tickets can be extremely fustrating. I have managed to do a stint of 10days in the Phillipines (only because I had a decent contract with 2 wk break), been to Japan for a week. If you don't mind paying peak prices and having a short break kool... but if like me you jsut want to wander I would save it for when u are finished.

You can absolutely travel during your contract period. The only difficulty is that it can be difficult to get trips planned because employers are usually completely disorganized/inconsiderate and you might not know about time off until the last minute. It can be done though.

Unless u get a great job with lots of time off, I'd vote for saving your money and doing some travelling afterwards.

I asked my school about getting me a long layover in Japan on my way home, and succeeded in getting a week there without paying. Free flight to Japan and home!
