Record Data Breaches In 2007
By MARK JEWELL, AP Business Writer
Sun Dec 30, 5:04 PM ET

BOSTON - The loss or theft of personal data such as credit card and Social Security numbers soared to unprecedented levels in 2007, and the trend isn't expected to turn around anytime soon as hackers stay a step ahead of security and laptops disappear with sensitive information.

And while companies, government agencies, schools and other institutions are spending more to protect ever-increasing volumes of data with more sophisticated firewalls and encryption, the investment often is too little too late.

"More of them are experiencing data breaches, and they're responding to them in a reactive way, rather than proactively looking at the company's security and seeing where the holes might be," said Linda Foley, who founded the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center after becoming an identity theft victim herself.

Foley's group lists more than 79 million records reported compromised in the United States through Dec. 18.
That's a nearly fourfold increase from the nearly 20 million records reported in all of 2006
.

Another group, Attrition.org, estimates more than 162 million records "compromised" through Dec. 21 both in the U.S. and overseas, unlike the other group's U.S.-only list.

Attrition reported 49 million last year.

Data "Lost" On 650,000 Credit Card Holders
By DAVID KOENIG, AP Business Writer

PLANO, Texas - Personal information on about 650,000 customers of J.C. Penney and up to 100 other retailers could be "compromised" after a computer tape went missing.

GE Money, which handles credit card operations for Penney and many other retailers, said Thursday night that the missing information includes Social Security numbers for about 150,000 people.

The information was on a backup computer tape that was discovered missing last October. It was being stored at a warehouse run by Iron Mountain Inc., a data storage company, and was never checked out but can't be found either, said Richard C. Jones, a spokesman for GE Money, part of General Electric Capital Corp.

Jones said there was "no indication of theft or anything of that sort," and no evidence of fraudulent activity on the accounts involved.

Harry Connick to Perform in Seoul March 13

By Chung Ah-young
Staff Reporter

This year, many music lovers might be elated with the big rush of high-profile musicians such as Celine Dion and Bjork performing here.

Now, American jazz musician Harry Connick Jr. is joining the rush to perform in Seoul on March 13, 10 years after he first held a concert here.

As one of the most popular jazz musicians, Connick gained popularity for his memorable numbers in film ``When Harry Met Sally'' (1989), starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.
The soundtrack consists of several standards, including ``It Had to Be You,'' ``Let's Call the Whole Thing Off'' and ``Don't Get Around Much More.''

The concert will be held at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul at 8:30 p.m., March 13.

Tickets cost from 50,000 to 120,000 won. For more information, call (02) 3444-9969.

Did Harry Connick recently have his credit card info stolen?

One more reason to guard our "privacy" etc. religiously.

Thanks for the heads-up.

No, truth is i actually don't get upset by much at all. Was that what you were hoping for? Laughing

What i mean is did Harry Connick have his credit card information stolen?

Is that your angle?

Fact is i always try to have an angle of some sort, even if some aren't able to immediately "connect the dots".
