It's astonishing how over-priced much of the stuff, especially electronics, is in Korea. But there are bargains.

One is the Ashton AT-1000 amplified speakers. EMart used to have them for 26,000 won, but you can still get them online, cheaper, too.

I am listening to Thelma Houston's album "I've Got the Music In Me," through my laptop (MP3s), and the sound is fantastic!

I am an audiophile with high end stuff back home, and these speakers produce sound that I am still delighted with. Great detail, lack of distortion, excellent treble, good bass considering.

Apparently they have the new T-amp, a digital amplifier that is cheap, efficient and clean.

The trick with modern speakers is to break them in slowly. When new, I run them for at least an hour with the sound barely audible, then turn them up a bit and go another hour. Then, keeping the bass to a minimum, I run them overnight at a low level. Modern speaker cones are quite stiff, and this helps break them in at the points needed to produce treble and fine detail, instead of crushing them right off with loud bass.

The amplifier also seems to benefit from running continuously for at least a day, or better three days.

Instead of those absurdly overpriced Korean boomboxes or desktop stereos (350,000 won????), this and a computer or MP3 player with radio are all you need. Heck, you can get a quite decent pocket Sanyo radio for about 20,000 won to hook up.

Zentro Quick Egg Boiler. It's a nifty item that costs around 10,000 won and you boil the eggs in your microwave, the metal tray being safe for it. Unlike other methods of microwaving eggs, this one doesn't require you to crack, poke, shell, or do anything extra to the egg. Just put in 2 cm of water in the bottom, put the tray on, place 4 raw eggs (still in the shell) on the tray, put on the top, and microwave the eggs on high for 12 minutes for hard-boiled egg and 8 for soft-boiled eggs).

Pace6 razors are also good. Not too expensive, even at a convenience mart, 6 bladed safety razors.

Korean Chess pieces! I'm thrilled they're written in two different scripts, one for each player's pieces. I use them for both Korean and Chinese Chess. Since I'm severely color-blind, it's tough for me to use the Chinese pieces which are written in the same script for both players' pieces and in two colors that look the same to me.

The post office, despite the fact that everyone wants to know what's in whitey's mail, it is super cheap compared to Canada Post.

Agreed I sent a huge box home for 60,000 won and it got there in 10 days. My dad sent me that same box for $120.00 and it took 10 weeks!

Taxi rides and bottled water are steal deals in Korea. Food and electronics are expensive from an American perspective. I got my Winter coat for 2,000 Won at a second hand store and it's just as good as what Home Plus and Emart are selling for 50,000 Won considering I only needed it until the end of this week. If you just want functional basic clothes, HomePlus and second hand stores are the way to go with bargain deals. No need to buy expensive at Lotte department store as you don't need to compete for social status with physical appearance as that doesn't really matter from a foreigner perspective. A nice blazer, slacks, (suit) and Dockers from home goes a long way when you do need to dress up.

Ths is quite good stuff, but it lasts forever, so you need to keep it in smaller tightly sealed containers.
