Went to the hole-in-the-wall computer shop today to pick up my custom box. Let my tell you why I am glad I didn't take Spliff's advice and order a truckload of boxes from Danawa to save seventy five bucks on my system.

First off, they are just starting to build it when I arrive at the scheduled time to pick it up (typical Koreans doing everyything at the last minute. No surprise).

-- The technician proceeds to fry the brand new Intel P35 mobo RIGHT BEFORE MY EYES.

They pull a new one and tell me the power supply they sold me also doesn't work so they swap that out, too.

THANK GOD THESE TWO MISHAPS WEREN'T ON MY DIME. HEAR THAT, SPLIFF?

The engineer then proceeded to spend three hours putting my system together. Granted, I made some modifications; asked for an extra hard drive, changed the RAM, etc.

In the end I walked out with one hell of an audio recording PC, formatted with English XP (free) configured with all the correct drivers and working perfectly.

I am so glad I didn't put this thing together myself. They worked on it for three hours for free and loaded windows AND ate the cost of the fried mobo and power supply. I would have been a very unhappy waygook if I had tried to put this thing together myself. Wink

Techs in this country have about as much qualification and skills to be a tech as much as I have to be a brain surgeon. K-Techs.. They make a mess of everything, at my school their solution to everything is format... Yey make teachers loose countless hours of work. Bunch of amature noobs.

Oi! I've been buying "boxes" from Danawa for years. Perhaps I've been lucky, but I've never had a bad device delivered. I also take great pride in putting my own system together...without frying motherboards.

$130 for an Intel DP35DP. Decent, I think.

Oh, I'm sure he was just a salesman with a screwdriver. Nonetheless, I left happy. I have no idea whether the fried mobo was their fault or not. I am just glad it wasn't mine.

Fine. Also, to be fair, it needs to be said that you missed an opportunity to learn and if something else goes south, you are none the wiser to diagnose it yourself. So it goes both ways.

Things go wrong. As I said to the 2 people I have done recent builds for, it seems the failure rate is getting higher in technology and yes, I concur, it almost makes more sense to have it built for you.

Then, I am speaking as one who has built a boatload of systems and for me, there is almost left to learn from a home build. (I had a recent problem due to an oversight of mine, the PSU was too weak, but in my own defense, the owner had had a string of bad PSUs and I really didn't want to tell him he needed a new one. And I thought he said 375w, not 325.)

If I didn't know anything about building, I would still do it myself. Maybe in the parking lot or something LOL, to save travel time in the event of a problem, but I would do it myself.

Actually, I learned quite a bit by watching. On their dime, moreover. Learning what it's like to fry a mobo is something I can take a vicarious lesson in.

I think you are missing my point.

Anyways...

As long as you are happy, that's all that counts but there is no need to dis spliff. I and many others agree totally with his ideas and ways (buy cheap, build yourself), but again, that's of no consequence to you.

Built a few boxes for myself in the past... have no interest in doing it myself anymore, for above mentioned reasons.

Also, I'm getting old and lazy.
