Hey,

Im lookking to get a job in seoul, prob a hogwon but i dont want to teach kindy. i dont mind any other ages as long as no split shifts, the (what seems) usual 2-9, 3-10 etc is fine with me. the problem is that i seem to be having probs getting these offers, loads of offers for outside of seoul, or teaching kindy but not what i want. it seems north americans are favoured and i also have quite a strong london accent to boot, though i can and do dampen that when talking with people. my question therefore is, what are my chances, should i hang on for what i actually want or settle. i dont mind going to incheon if that was to help.

hope you can help

Try the Seoul Metropolitan Office Education website (SMOE) or apply through a recruiter, like ESL Planet.

I think in the current climate it should certainly be possible.

You might want to consider public schools for a late february/early march start. You should get hired easily by either the Incheon public school system or SMOE (Seoul). You could also work for GEPIK which might place you very close to Seoul... or you might be in the sticks a bit.

If Incheon is acceptable I recommend Canadian Connections recruiting. Despite the name they also hire non-Canucks (I've known people from all 7 of the acceptable countries who've been recruited by them). They are one of the recruiters for the Incheon city public school program. Maybe for SMOE too but I don't know.http://www.canconx.com is Canadian Connections. They'll also hook you up with hagwans if you want too.

i see this also, the problem i have is not applying for the job, it is getting the job. because as of my being british and only having a Ba, i should of mentioned that earlier. this i feel is ending up in quite a few dead ends for me, before i even get an interview

Simply put, many teachers prefer to be in Seoul and alot of people aren't keen on teaching kindy. This means recruiters are stuck with alot of positions to fill which are less desirable. First they are going to say its because of your accent, if you had a NA accent, they would say they would prefer a female. If you were female with an NA accent, they might cite your age/ethnicity as a reason (with varying degrees of subtlety), and so forth.

In a nutshell, if you stick to your guns about the type of position and location you are looking for, you will get it. I mean you are asking for a regular 2-9 NON kindy job in Seoul (perhaps the most common teaching gig in korea) and not something absurd a job teaching 13yr old korean kids with a strong love of British comedy and cricket in a small town of 700.

Go with standard picky and frustrate yourself less.

Try reverse psycology!! When I was applying for jobs, I stated anywhere except Seoul and I was bombarded with job offers from Seoul Very Happy

Being from the UK means nothing and having a degree means you are perfectly qualified.

I'm going PS and Seoul next time I come here! I want to ride home on the subway - outing myself as a total hick at the same time!
