very sorry to hear about this.....hope she recovers. Unfortunately to make a horrible situation worse, I doubt anything will be done about it by the Korean police.

There was an article in the Korea Times about a police crackdown on shady taxi drivers in the greater Seoul area who have committed numerous crimes including rape on their passengers.

I don't think they only target foreigners...

it wasnt the cab driver that did this, it was a person out on the street after the cab left.

And it happened just near Samsandong.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a culturally relevant rape myth acceptance scale for Koreans. Three studies on the Korean Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (KRMAS) with approximately 1,000 observations provide initial validity and reliability. Specifically, results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses support four subscales: myths about rape survivors, rape perpetrators, the impact of rape, and rape as spontaneous. The KRMAS was validated with student and community samples and a factorial invariance analysis provided evidence for the factor structure across men and women. The KRMAS total score was positively related to the Attitudes Toward Sex Role ScaleKorean and the Acceptance of Violence Scale, indicating that greater endorsement of rape myth acceptance was related to greater levels of attitudes toward traditional sex roles and violence against women. Implications of the findings and future research directions are provided.

Of course it's true. Form a personal friendship with a number of Non-Korean women, here, and you'll eventually learn of a sexual assault or an attempted assault by a native -- I know a couple of people.

Those considering coming to Korea, beware: RAPE of foreign women is not treated as a crime, in the most literal sense, and the police will not even file reports, let alone advise you on the appropriate medical and psychological care, or getting in contact with support systems and survivors.

THIS IS NOT A MINOR ISSUE: look into GEPIK stats on female teachers placed in rural areas: tell me, what is the number one reason for their relocation, and what kinds of "complaints" do they file?

But of course, we are not to discuss these issues, because definitions of rape are culturally relative, no matter how many people are affected: we can't blame Koreans for having different notions of what constitutes consent, and it certainly is NOT justifiable to warn foreign women about the matter of their personal safety, right?

A guy was telling a story (could be hearsay, but sounds plausible) about a girl who was followed home by a drunk Korean man in Haebongchon. The man soon broke into her home and began assaulting her. Finally, a foreigner her her screaming, busted in, tied up the guy and called the cops. When the cops arrived, they refused to press charges or arrest him because they said he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing. The foreign man was astounded. He went to the fridge, chugged a bear, beat the living shit out of the rapist and told the police he was drunk, too, and didn't know what he was doing.

I didn't find out if the foreign man got in trouble for this, but all in all, paying bloodmoney is better than letting a rapist go unpunished.

As much as I hate almost everything that is Korea...I find this hard to believe...that a police officer would not arrest for rape...this is outrageous and should be reported to some international organisation or something like that...at least contact the woman's embassy...If it is true, then my hatred for the dirty, feminine, putrid smelling Korean men has reached a new level...

They often don't arrest or prosecute Koreans for other crimes, even violent ones, against foreigners. Being drunk is also a legal defense here. Why would a rape case be any different?

I personally think that rape is one of the crimes that deserves the death penalty...I am so glad that I am leaving this country this year...a country that will prosecute and demonize foreigners for minor infractions but let a drunken korean man get away with rape...in 4 years here I have heard some fcked up *beep* but this tops the cake...hard to believe but then again, korean men are the most despicable Asian men I have ever met and I have lived all through Asia...they come across so righteous and yet they all cheat, all use hookers and treat their women like shit and now this piece of info is just the cherry on the cake......if this is indeed true, it might be time for some vigilante style delivered justice...Im in

Here are some articles related to lack of punishment for rapists:

http://koreabeat.com/?p=633

Quote:
Why do I have to stay silent My assailant is living so happily but why does it have to be so hard for me to get people to understand This crime is one where the victims cannot speak and their victimizers place blame on them, saying it was just her bad luck or 당할 만했다. That is the crime of sexual assault.

But the victims of sex crimes are changing. These women, forced into silence by an oppressive society, are coming out and openly saying, I am a victim.

On the 3rd at the KT&G상상마당 라이브홀 in Hongdae the survivors of sexual assault took the stage at the and told their stories. The four survivors who took the stage occasionally couldnt find the voice with which to speak, but they revealed their hearts until the audience burst into applause. Over 130 attended. The survivors spoke together, saying through our words you can understand our pain and we can be healed.

That day saw the first event devoted entirely to the Sexual Assault Survivors Speak-out Event (성폭력 말하기 대회). This one was the fifth Speak-out Event since the first in 2003. At the first, five years ago, a handful of women came together and told their stories. After that it slowly developed, evolving from an event with restricted admission to allowing anyone to attend today. Over 30 men attended this year. This comes 15 years after the first Speak-out Day was organized in Australia, the United States and elsewhere.

At this years event thy experimented with a new format that included songs written and performed by a sexual assault survivor. They wanted to make the event into one that focuses on healing and taking a positive outlook on life rather than being sad and serious.

The Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center (한국성폭력상담소) also organized a similar event. Starting in April the Center has held events on the last Wednesday of each month where victims of sexual assault come together and tell of their experiences. 1o to 20 or more women attend each time. Assistant Director Lee Yun-sang said, its not organized through our membership so at first we worried it wouldnt turn out well, but many more women than we expected have been coming.

And recently a lively blog culture has sprung up among women writing of their experiences of sexual assault and commenting and leaving trackbacks. Their posts, with titles like What happened to me on the subway, (지하철에서 겪은 일) and Women, be careful (여자분들 조심하세요), often become popular with women in their 20s and 30s who read blogs. In September at the meta-blog site egloos!! (이글루스) one post about a womens experience of sexual harassment was featured on the front page of the site after receiving over 400 nominations, and through that opportunity a debate opened over the shameful issue of sex crimes.

So what is the reason for women to now be so openly telling their stories of sexual violence? Leesan, an activist with the KSVRC, explains, through telling their stories victims can heal themselves and change society through their own voices.

This one takes the cake: Forcing teens into prostitution, being caught, then doing the same thing IN A PLACE OF BUSINESS a few months later.

Quote:
A husband and wife who drew a teenaged girl into prostitution by sending her text messages promising to give her a lot of money has been caught by police.

The Yangcheon Police Department announced on the 5th that it had applied for arrest warrants for dabang owner Mr. Park (27) and his wife Mrs. Kim (31) on suspicion of luring in beautiful women, forcing them into prostitution and taking away their earnings and other goods.

In mid-October the couple registered on a chatting site popular with teenagers and left the message if you work in a dabang you can make a lot of money. Close friends Park (15) and Kim (16) saw and replied to the message. The couple forced the girls to live in their home in Tongyeong, telling them, youve become criminals, and if you run away well make you sorry. In fact the couple wanted to be members of a gang.

The girls were held at the apartment from mid-October until November 25th, and were forced to work in a ticket dabang from 8 in the morning to 7 at night. Men went to the dabang, drank tea with them and then paid for sex. The couple charged men 150,000 won per time, a total of more than 50 times, earning some 7.5 million won.

A source at the police said, they had been punished for a similar offense about four or five months before. We really need to do something about teen prostitution in these dabangs and the chatting sites that so many of the teens use.

it happens everywhere even in my local paper today but what I cant comprehend is that it would be let go as a "drunk thing" in this country...if it is true then this is a real feather in the cap of the Korean justice system...This country is so Fcked up from the roots to the tips of the leaves on its highest branches...no identity, stuck between two stronger asian countries..a patriarchal society to the extreme, they look like monkeys and act worse then them.....
