"How can anyone govern a nation that has 246 different kinds of cheese?"
Charles de Gaulle
You can tell a lot about a country from its cheese. Making a fine cheese takes skill, patience, generations of experience, and refined taste. It also takes the right cows and good grass.
Which country do you believe makes the finest cheese in the world?

Why isn't England on the list?
I am sorry but Cheddar and Red Leicester, along with Double Gloucester, have got to be my favourites. |

As Tzechuk says, the English make a good cheese but my favourite has to be German Bavarian smoked cheese, it is the business!
Or a Spanish machengo. |

Uh, it's on there as "Britain."
I agree. Surprisingly, considering England's culinary reputation, England produces more varieties of craftsman cheese than even France, and England's best cheeses are unmatched.
Of course I've never even heard of British wine... |

Australia, New Zealand and Canada have just ripped off our Cheddar Cheese Typical colonial behaviour... I was in emart and saw 'Australian Cheddar' for 7000 won... excuse me? I didn't know cheddar gorge was in Australia!
If I did the poll, Germany, Spain Denmark and Greece would be there as well as Norway (nothing better than a nice Jarlsberg!) |

Be my guest.
Create your own poll and see if you can add those countries to the ones already on the list. Don't forget to add Italy, too.

Good grief!
You can only put 10 (ten) 1-0 choices on the poll.
Don't blame me. I did put "other" there, and invited you to rant your heart out. |

You want to know the great thing about cheese?
They're all different. That's what's so wonderful about real cheese.
It's rather amazing, isn't it?
I don't think there's any one best country for making cheese. I like em all. Real cheese, that is. |

British. No doubt.
Brit cheese isn't always a knock-out, wow, amazing taste explosion, but, for daily consumption, as a cheese for the common man, it beats any other.
But, yeah. As one poster says......every country in the world (except Korea) produces a few good real cheeses. But Britain produces a lot of good real cheese which isn't just locally available. It's in every supermarket.
Dutch cheese is also great to buy on a regular basis. The problem with Italian and French cheeses is that you're not supposed to eat a lot of it. It's strong, characterful and very rich. That doesn't suit the consumer who wants a bit of cheese most every day.
American and Canadian cheeese? As a mass product? Forget it. Hopeless. Sure, there are fine locally available cheeses in N. America. But their mass produced stuff is woefully bland. |
