Do you feel bad for hagwon owners who can't find foreign teachers due to the new government policies to protect Sparkling from the pedophiles, drug abusers and filth from abroad?

Money talks. If they want FT's then they should pay.

I guess I can be the one to go against the grain here. I realize that the odds are bad, but there are some good hagwon owners out there, and I really do feel bad that they're having a harder time.

Question, though- maybe I'm just out of it, but are they actually having that hard of a time finding teachers? It doesn't seem like my boss has had it any more difficult since the changes...

It's not a matter of pity or envy, but rather plain economics and human limitations. As it is, the hagwon market is saturated with hundreds of hagwons in each city alone in a razor thin competition for a limited market.
There simply are not enough students to give every ESL teacher full time employment.

At some point, the Koreans are going to have to question the very idea of continueing to import ESL teachers. If the ESL Hagwon Industry is successful, within the next 5 years there should be an ample supply of bilingual Koreans who can teach English to the other Koreans. If those bilingual teachers are not there, then the Koreans will have to question the wisdom of trying to force every Korean schoolkid to learn English.

My short answer is: no

If anything good comes from this, maybe it will weed out and close down some of the bad hagwons who are just out there to make money. On the other hand, I guess it wouldn't surprise me if it didn't.

I know 2 recruiters who just quit the biz because of the new policies. I assume they can't be arsed with any more whimsical changes either.

I say bring on the Filippina and Pakistani ESL teachers. Laughing

Last one out be sure to turn the light off.

Sure, I can feel sorry for them. Why not?

They're losing their businesses, with a policy that's clearing out the little guy. I can appreciate that it's a kick up the bum for the industry - and for the fly by night hagwons who think whitey=education dollars it's better that they go.

Still it'll be tougher to find teachers to go to small towns, meaning the edge will be given, even more so than it already is, to the cities.

The only winners I can see here will be the hagwons who operate as BIG businesses in the large cities - who are having their competition wiped away.

No, because the ones that learn English well mostly emigrate and don't return.
And in any case, a korean with a good knowledge of english still cannot, ever, match a native speaker to whom english is his mother tongue.

Some ppl actually do feel sorry for haggie owners- kills me. I'd like to see a haggie that doesn't screw teachers over in some way. Some might think they haven't been screwed, but that's only because they aren't aware of it. Haggie owners care about their bottom line, and don't care how their foreign teacher is fitting in or if the kids are actually learning anything. Screw hagwon owners. They are total bottom-feeders.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen you show so much .... hate?

I'll stick with my assertion that hogwans have never done any bad by me. But hey, I'm tall, clean, and "handsome". Wink Everything anyone needs to get on well in Korea.
