Ok, so my co-workers and I were out at the SKY 24, having a few beers on a Friday afternoon in the sun and this waekook dude comes up to us and joins us. Nice guy and all, but when one of us asked him if he'd been here a while, he said: "Oh yeeeaaahh, I've been here a long time," so another one of us asked him how long he'd been in Korea, and he said: "6 months" in a proud way. Well, we couldn't help but chuckle, cuz among my co-workers, I've been here the least amount of time, at 5 years.
So my question is this: How long should someone have been here before he/she can actually say they've been here for a long time?

| That's kind of funny because I still think of you as a newbie. |

I have a colleague who trumps almost all conversations about Korea with the fact that she has been here 6 1/2 years, so she knows everything (except how to pronounce things written in Hangul ). It is so annoying. Some people I know have been here for about two years and have learned a lot, including a useful knowledge of the language. Others have been here 10 years and seem to know nada.
Curiosity, work and openness are more important criteria for understanding than mere years present here. I like to think I have learned something in 2 1/2 years, but I admit to being really green about the country, and the language. I am hoping to learn a lot more, but, if I don't get more agressive in finding out about things, I could end up like the ones with a decade and little knowledge.
To answer the question, I have been here a lot longer than I thought I would be, so in that regard, I guess I have been here "a long time". |

Honestly, anyone who completes a full year of their school screwing them over, and decides to STAY should be considered a long-timer. Too many of the newbies either can't finish the year, or they want to leave so bad by the end of the contract, they practically don't need the plane to get there.

Sometimes it does seem like another planet- but it is really just another dimension of the real world. I hope you are not believing that somehow the U.S. is "real"? |

| How long does one need to stay in Korea before the average Korean, upon meeting you for the first time, doesn't treat you like you just arrived the day before? |

Guru's Newbie Classification Rules, #23
You're still a newbie if you rag about "those friggin' newbies".
But hey -- there's nothing wrong with being a newbie. The most intense experiences, the memories that will last you forever, you can write 5 pages a day in your diary in a single sitting.... Sheesh! I really envy you friggin' newbies!! |

Takes a while.
Depends where you are (ex: if you live in one area for a while this will just stop happening). |

Yeap, you're still green.
I think 5-6 years is the threshold to intermediate term. and then you need to make it to 10+ years to start long term. Anyhow in 2 weeks I start my 9th year. |

Actually more than a year is a long time anywhere that is not home.
Forget the fools who call anyone newbies. Nonsense. We are all newbies outside our home areas.
And truly we are all newbies forever no matter where we go. Truly. That requires zero thought to realize. |
