I've heard that it is now possible to teach privates legally, but I haven't seen any specific information about it. What must you do to teach privates legally? Do you need a different visa? What forms must you fill out? What steps need to be taken?

Is there a website with this sort of information?

The major problem with teaching privates illegally is that you must find privates through word of mouth. It's risky to advertise yourself. If I teach them legally, then I can advertise myself and take the best privates with the best fees and schedule.

You can do it "legally" with an F-2 visa (residency, spousal etc), but you have to declare the income to the Korean government and pay tax on it so it isn't in effect "private".
For folk with E-2s it's simply not possible. The only way around it would be for your boss to give the go-ahead for you to pick up extra students and teach them at your hagwon... but I would be monumentally surprised if ANY hagwon owner allowed that to happen without taking the money for him/herself!!

Yes, I assume that you've an E-2, so nix the idea of legal privates, but get this gang.

Ok, maybe I can't get this logic, yet won't complain.

I, as most know, have an F-2, and have informed immigration of all my privates and do in fact pay taxes. So, they're legal...for now, as I've no other employment.

Here's what I just can't grasp....the F-2 allows a bit more freedom, and immigration seems to have no problem with me continuing having my privates if I were to gain full-time employment (at a uni., for example).

Regular E-2 holders can't.
Korean citizens can't. My wife (a Korean) can private her arse off, until she becomes a professional educator, then it's illegal....just the same for Korean professors and the like...

Ummmm, wth?

Shoosh,m

What I love is how Ryst always tells me I should bust my ass and do 5 billion privates a week to richify myself. And then I remind him I'm not married. And then he says it again. And again. And again.

Funny farm, I tells ya.

Funny farm, yes, but I own the funny farm with my hard work .... I am glad you are happy where you are financially.

Let's see, 6 years of pimping my ass off, took the risks and got paid WELL for my risks....yeah, do it again any day.

As for married, that's moot. I did privates as a single for 4 years here.

Shooshing in the nest egg,

Ryst
