are they worth a visit because the airfares are quite cheap?

They sure aren't like Thailand or the Philippines. The weather will be poor this time of year (as in not hot at all, but warm during the day). If you don't set your hopes up high, you may not be disappointed.

If you do decide to go, Baisha beach outside of Kenting is decent, better than the beaches right in Kenting. Hsaio Liuchiu is also nice. I would base myself out of Kaoshiung if I were going there and then make my way down. If you like windsurfing, Penghu is supposed to be world class.
