In Florida today Fred Thompson dropped out of the race. Why did he even bother to go to Florida?
This isn't a huge surprise to anyone who saw his speech after the SC caucus, as that sounded like an "I'm out" speech even more than Biden's. It's kind of funny that Thompson's camp told the media he would make a "big announcement" during the speech and they interrupted coverage to show the speech. Chris Matthews was pissed off over that one.
He has not endorsed McCain, as most of the punditicos thought he would do when he dropped out. Then again the ones that didn't say that seemed to think he would stay in the race to draw votes from Huckabee.
So, what do you think about this? Does this change the Rep field at all, or is it just a non-contender admitting his status and slinking away? |

not a "non-contender" but rather a failed contender. fret not. he'll get to keep the trophy wife, TV residuals and the lobbying. he'll survive.
never seemed like it wanted it at all but rather went through the motions. reminded me of W's first campaign. |

What a dud he turned out to be. Just a few short months ago the media was trumpeting his possible entry into the race and how it would shake things up, some giving the impression that he might just walk away with the nomination.
It looks to me like he believed the media hype.
The biggest impact his leaving will make is that the TV set will be less crowded at the next debate, leaving more time for the real players. |

Perhaps I'm just more engaged this time around, but it seems like the election coverage has been especially obnoxious this time around. Are these guys just trying to justify their jobs? It feels much more like sports coverage than I ever remember it last time around. I'm not a fan. |

I haven't been subjected to it since '92, but up till then, it had been getting worse each time. While I enjoy politics, I abhor the role the media creates for itself in presidential politics. About 25% of the time I'm nostalgic for the old front-porch campaigns when it was considered unseemly for candidates to actively campaign. (And no, I'm not old enough to remember them. I've just read about them.) |

I agree, he never was a factor. Dead Fred's endorsement isn't worth much as it would be if he had a heartbeat and had run a decent campaign.
I propose starting a website named www.ripfredthompson.com where people can send their condolences.
RIP

Yeah, but you haven't gotten AROUND to considering the possibility that Thompson has a Hollywood-sized ego, which is easy to stroke, especially when he wants to please he much younger wife, or take flights of fancy that he's the next Ronald Reagan.
But leave it to a loser to dedicate a thread to the plight of another loser. |

I'm astounded by how much you like red herring, Steve. How do you like it served? Steamed? Poached? Cooked in your own bile? |
