Any linux junkies in here? I want to try it but don't really have a clue. Could someone recommend a good (free) distro for normal every-day use? Alternatively some links to good overviews and/or "which distro is for me" type things would be handy. |

I've been running Linux for nearly a year and will not go back to Windows! I've been running Ubuntu for 90% of the time (I was running PCLinuxOS briefly). Ubuntu is a pretty user friendly distro and is pretty capable of competing with Windows. There are quite a few different versions of Ubuntu released. There is Ubuntu Studio which is geared towards graphic/video/audio design. Ubuntu Gamers, Ubuntu (basic distro is now up to 7.10), etc. The best part is that they come with Wine (a windows emulation program so you can run Windows apps as well).

Feel free to pm me with any questions you have. |

If you will not go back to windows why do you need a windows emulation program? come on make an honest choice either you will not use windows or you will, don't claim to quite windows but then mask it in an emulation program.
this is just like the guy who quits smoking but sneaks outside once in a while for a smoke without telling anyone. |

Nothing wrong with adding functionality to your OS. Yes running windows apps in Linux is adding functionality. And if a guy quits smoking and still enjoys an occasional smoke what do you care? He is probably doing it because he likes it. |

You should definitely play around with a couple of the live cds for various distributions before installing one. The live cd will run everything from the cd and not install anything on the hard drive unless you want to.
I recommend trying out Knoppix. It's not a distro you would want to install but it will give you an idea of how well your computer/hardware will work with Linux and let you play around with the programs. If you like it, you can search for a more permanent distro.
Before making a decision, if any two pieces of hardware don't work, try a different distribution. |

I just switched to ubuntu from windows recently and found the transition to be very smooth and very easy. I would recommend it. |

On the wine thing: I refrained from using wine for a while but couldn't find any torrent client that was as good as utorrent. All the others suck and utorrent works perfectly under wine. |

I wanted to be a marathoner once, but the crutches just wouldn't let me compete.
PS: Winer. |

I thought utorrent had a linux version now. Musta been wrong.
Anyway, would it be possible to get one of these CDs that I can try it from in korea? Wait, they probably just have an iso of it somewhere you can download, right?
And about games. I thought you couldn't game in linux unless there is a linux version. True or not? And how about running games in the windows emulator. Feasible, or does it take a performance hit?
Is there a place to check if hardware is compatible with a certain distro? |

All of the distro sites have live cd iso's for download.

Are you running a laptop or desktop? Linux and laptops are 50/50 with an install. The best way is to try a few distros and see what works. I recommended Knoppix because the auto-detection is the best around. If your computer has problems with Knoppix it will have more difficulty with other distros. That doesn't mean you can't run Linux. It means you may have to configure your system manually. The biggest headaches are wireless and video.

I use wine to run FruityLoops (music creation software) in Linux. Besides it never hurts to add some more functionality to a system as someone already mentioned. |

What functionality is missing from windows? none that I am aware of so there is no need to run a virtual environment. |

"Adding functionality"? That's a word reserved for where functionality already exists and is augmented, not taking a corpse and making it's hand flop about a little. |

There are many reasons people want to use Linux instead of Windows, one of which is that its built on Unix so it's stable. This doesn't mean they don't want access to Windows-only apps or files, and the insinuation that it does is misinformed, at best. |
