Would it be economical to buy a DSLR in Korea or buy one back at home? How much would I really save (if at all)? I'm sure there are some great stores in the Seoul area (particularly Bundang), but where are they? Thanks! |

Buy it in the USA for sure. Korea jacks up the price of cameras 50%. |

I did a hell of a lot of research on the price of my DSLR, lenses, mem cards, tripods, etc.
I was NOT ripped off buying them here. |

Dude, I couldn't find any piece of electronic equipment that wasn't at least twice as much here as it was in the States. I remember buying my notebook computer in Korea and wiping out an entire paycheck then traveling to Thailand to find that it was selling for $300.00 there. |

Thailand is not part of the States, right?
And we're talking about DSLRs, not computers.
I'm just saying...I certainly did NOT get screwed. The guy tried to sort of screw around. When I started asking detailed questions about f/stops, shutter speeds, and materials, he knew I wasn't fucking around and gave me the right price.
I checked Nikon's official website, which clearly gave body, body plus lens A, and body plus lens B prices, as well as various American photo websites, and Korean websites before I ever went out to buy the camera.
I spent the same here as I would have at home. |

I promise you the best deal you can find anywhere in the U.S. will be on this website - they advertise as where prof pjs go and it's true - I am one.
I was going to buy a dc in 2006 just before going to Africa; it was time to ditch my film camera tho I had had a dc once before. I went out and priced the ones here, compared to what I wanted and talked to some K pro pjs who are friends of mine - the price just wasn't right. not twice as much, but a significant markup that just pissed me off enough - and I wasn't going to be able to discuss the purchase w/a salesman anyway since I didn't speak K.
I wound up buying a great Olympus in HK - am very happy w/it.
so, go to B&H's website and check out all the info you can, get price info and then go shopping and see if you can even FIND what you want here - what I've found over time is most of the merchandise here is also dated - rarely will the newest models even be available.
if you aren't satisfied, then make plans to go to Jp or HK and buy something there.
fyi, a lot of cameras here are made in Thailand - and I would NOT pay top price for a camera made there - i.e, if it's a jp brand I want one made in Jp - so yes, you might have to travel there for one.
pm me if you have more qs |

entry level dslr sounds like a d40 or a d80. you'll pay about 50 - 100 bucks more for those two cameras here if you shop around. Even at hi-mart the d40 was only 80 more than it was on amazon if I recall correctly. |

OK, well, I checked the price of my D80 and lens there.
I DID NOT get screwed here.
Having said that, Moosehead hit on a good point: if you don't speak Korean, bring a Korean with you. Hell, even if you do speak Korean, if you're not Korean and/or a female, bringing a male Korean will help you. |

I did my research and got my DSLR for cheaper than anywhere I've seen in the states. I'd say do your research and you'll get a good deal. They'll definitely start with a higher price but at a place like Yongsan or other major sellers, you can get a great deal. |

I know you keep saying over and over you did not get screwed. But how much did you pay here for your camera? What was the model #, lens? |

I paid 350,000won for my Canon S5is, and a 2gig ultra high speed card.
Hardly a rip off. |

Just don't buy it in Yongsan.
I got my DSLR here and it was cheaper than American prices, and prices anywhere else I could check. |
