So i have been here about three weeks. I talked to my boss about my insurance and they gave me some rates from AIG and from ACE. But they both say they only cover 50% of everything without the national insurance plan, really making it a supplemental insurance plan. My question is this. IS the school i work for required by law to provide me with the national insurance plan or is it an option that all schools have to pick what type of insurance to offer to thier ESL teacher. I dont want to get screwed. The prices for the insurance a really pretty good, its not the money, i just want to have the insurance that i should have while being here. Thanks a lot for your help

They are required by law (as of Jan 1, 2006) to have you (and all legally employed foreigners) covered under the national NHIC plan ( http://www.nhic.or.kr/eng/ ) but if they do it will flag you (and all their other employees) for medical and pension and MOST hakwons avoid this like the plague.

You are getting screwed. Luckly you.

Yes, you need the national health care plan.

My guess is:

1. That your boss is shooting you the AIG figures to scare you off of getting insurance (saving him money).

OR

2. That your boss doesn't know you can go on the national health care plan.

You most certainly should get on the national health care plan. Now for the bad news: If you delay, you will still have to back-pay for every day since the date on your E-2 ARC card. So if you end up getting the insurance in three months, you'll still back-pay for every day that you have been in Korea on your ARC.

In other words, it's in your best interest to get this done quickly. If you boss won't do it, you need to threaten to take action over it. Be nice initially, but if that doesn't work, you need to start playing hardball. By that, I mean setting a date, warning them about it, then if it's not done, sitting in the lobby and refusing to teach that day until it is handled. If they scream at you that you will be fired, then remind them that they can do that, but they'll have to go through the hell and expense of finding another teacher, and that all you are asking for is what is in your contract.

If they still won't pay, then contact the Labor Board and see if you can get out for breech of contract.

I have been looking at health insurance and have a question. Is it necessary to keep some insurance at home?

I know the 50% health insurance is covered, but what worries me is if something chronic is diagnosed while teaching abroad. Would finding health insurance coverage back home in the states be impossible to obtain?
