So I'm upgrading the crap out of my semi-outdated, Taiwanese gaming rig. I didn't pay much for it (strapped for cash), but over time I've made it quite admirable.
So far, I replaced an old GeForce 6800 chipset to a GeForce 8600GT and I recently purchased some Ram (hard to find 512mb sticks) and brought it up to 2GB.
The last order of business is the CPU. Right now, I'm running an AMD Athlon 3200+ / 2.01GHz. I believe the chipset was manufactured in 2003. This is a problem.
However, my motherboard is rather ambiguous and isn't even popular enough to be recognized with search engines. Therefore, I'm quite a bit iffy as to what CPU I should upgrade to.

What kind of processor do you recommend? I don't want to install it myself. I built computers when I was a kid but haven't touched much on the hardware side of things since before University as I had a laptop. I'm back into manual upgrades in Korea, but the last time I tinkered around on the inside of a tower, the maximum amount of Ram a motherboard could hold was 512mb and the best video cards were 64mb.
Those were the simple days.
What kind of CPU do you recommend? I'd prefer to have it installed professionally, so what chain stores do this and also offer a CPU that is compatible with my rig?
Thanks. |

Without knowing your mainboard make/model, nobody can help you. In any event, you will most certainly need to flash the BIOS for newer chip support...well, to upgrade to anything worth it.
Cripes! 64MB video cards were the deal when you last built computers and at that time you were "a kid"? How old are you...19?!
As far as building, things have definitely gotten easier over time. |

You could just get a new motherboard. 99,000 will get you a mobo compatible with Intel C2D and Quad-core chips which are the best chips around at the moment.
100,000 for motherboard. 170,000 for a good Core 2 Duo or 266,000 for a Q6600 quad-core.
I'd rather spend 99,000 for the motherboard than mess around with a 5 year-old AMD board. |

So this is your mainboard?
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum&class=mb
Spend the 250k won and upgrade to a current generation mainboard, CPU and RAM.
You'll be so happy that you did.
Oh, and BTW, all the chips that fit that mainboard have been discontinued (P4@2Ghz generation) so you will be hunting through the old parts boxes and refurbished parts guys for a replacement/upgrade chip. |

Correct board, wrong info. That's a socket 939 board, not Intel. There aren't a lot of 939 CPUs left out there, just a handful, and they're not widely available.
I'd have to agree that buying a new board and the necessary upgrades would be the smartest thing to do.

I realize it is an AMD and not Intel P4 but they are of the same generation and were competitors in the marketplace (2 generations back I might add) so I used it as a comparason since the intel core2duos are the most hyped and popularly understood at the current time and might give him some perspective on how difficult doing just a CPU upgrade will be.

new MOBO & CPU will require new RAM. it's unfortunate that you already upgraded the ram. |
