yes it does actually exist!! although i value wondergirls and their ilk's cute, bouncy, catchy, saccharine pop for what it is (i.e. not terribly much), there is actually a fair bit of genuinely good korean music!

not only my favourite korean band, but also one of my favourite rock acts ever happens to be jaurim (자우림). and i hope it's not only because of my fantasies of bearing the children of lead singer and songwriter, kim yuna. they're excellent musically - a great blend of jazz, rock, even funk sometimes and they are blessed with two fantastic lyricists. here's a beautiful song off their first album:

also as far as rock goes, i think nell is a perfectly respectable band who do much more with the early radiohead aesthetic than bloody coldplay do. crying nut is a fun punk band, who are at least truer to the punk ethic than greenday, and pia is equally fun with their version of nu-metal or whatever they call that sort of thing these days.

i think korean hiphop is blessed with some awesome talent. drunken tiger is solid, real hip-hop. there's also dynamic duo, and t - tho i wish she would rap a bit more. mc sniper does something different with the genre - he's a fine rapper and makes at times truly beautiful beats.

here's some e.g.s:
nell:

crying nut:

pia:

can anybody think of any other korean music that's actually good?

I can think of tons more. I'll link myspace pages instead of youtube because most of these bands don't have good videos.

If you like ska and reggae, Korea has a great bluebeat band called Kingston Rudieska.

As far as rock and roll goes, Galaxy Express are turning a lot of heads.

That vintage rock and roll sound is popular in Korea these days. The Moonshiners have quite a following.

MR27 is the closest thing to psychobilly you can find in this country. The lead singer is an American, and unfortunately he's out of the country at present.

After two US tours, the Geeks are probably Korea's most successful band in America. Not bad for a straight-edge hardcore band.

Girl is practically a genre of punk in Asia. Korea's best known girl punk band is Shorty Cat.

Hollow Jan are worth it even if you don't like screamo.
http://www.myspace.com/hollowjan

Captain Bootbois are a skinhead band that got a little too talented with their instruments and have started to turn metal.

Ghetto Bombs are probably the most popular Korean punk band after Crying Nut.

Rux is really the band that has picked up where Crying Nut left off. The lead singer has done more for the Korean punk scene in the last five years than anyone else.

Couch, Korea's most hated band.

Suck Stuff had a half Korean/American singer for a while who wrote some really good lyrics.

Vassline has taken over the metal scene of Korea.

Korea used to have a great music scene back in the '60s and early '70s before the government started cracking down.

Here's a great Korean surf song from Johnny Lee.

Shin Joong-hyun was the most successful Korean rocker of the '60s and '60s, until President-for-life Park Junghee asked him to start making pro-government songs. He refused and was thrown in prison, which was the beginning of the end of Korean popular music for years.

I have to cut this list short.
