I was asked by a reporter today my thoughts on Korean food.
I said i thought Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Cambodian food were all better.
Why?
I explained that the other countries use more than one pepper and have more variety than Korean food.
So you think Korean food is too spicy?
I then told her that Korean food is NOT spicy, if they want spicy food try an Indian vindaloo.
How can Korean food become more popular throughout the world?
I said Korea needs to create some world class dishes first.
That is honestly how i feel about Korean food. |

Lots of good, hearty, filling Korean foods. The kind of stuff a grandmother would make you. Lots of meat, which is good. If possible I'd be happier with a rotating mix of food from all these countries, although I'd leave out Japanese food (except donkassu). |

They all think that their food is too spicy for non-Koreans. Some of the spicy dishes such as yuk gae jang have been dumbed down for me on many occasions. But, by and large their food is not spicy as you stated. It has a lot of garlic and that accounts for a lot of the foul smell.
I also tell them Korean food is not spicy but it sure smells bad. |

Well, what is spicy or not is largely subjective. Some English people, for example, would find the food spicy, and others wouldn't. A lot depends on the kind of food you ate when you were young.
I agree that Korean food, when taken as a whole, is not amazing, but there are plenty of quality dishes to be had. Samgyetang, for example, is good stuff. Banchan like kimchi are interesting and unique, and Korean foods (in the form of restaurants) are certainly increasing in popularity across the world. |

Yeah i think the 'it's too spicy for foreigners' is used by Korean society to explain why other nations aren't enamoured by Korean food.
It's not too spicy, it's just mediocre food. |

Lack of polish in presentation. Table top BBQ. If I'm going to eat out why the hell should I have to cook it? Korean food is poorly served. Japanese food LOOKS good. Chinese food IS good. Korean food is a random guess. Is this fish going to taste like glue? Is it going to have lots of little bones? Most people don't want to spit offal on the floor during a meal. |

A good way to judge a countries' food is to see how guests to Korea react to the food. I've had a very hard time finding food that my relatives liked during visits to Korea, and these are not fussy people. Usually one of the great things about travelling to a foreign country is sampling the native food, but I think when most foreigners get a look at a table full of fermented vegetables, pig fat, meat covered in spicy paste, or even galbi, they are hardly blown away. It is also very true that Korea relies almost exclusively on gochu-jung for flavouring, hardly a claim to fame.
The best thing about Korean food is that it isn't fattening, for the most part.
A culinary celebration? I don't think so. |

Well, the xenophobic flag waving over kimchi is amusing in a most condescending way, komerican.
To Korea's credit, I was never one to eat soup back in Canada-I actually look forward to a lot of the soup I eat here, provided it's not kimchi soup. |

I think the food is good...not great, but good. I think Chinese is better, French is better, Thai is better, but I like Korean better than Spanish or Japanese of Vietnamese. |

Gam-ja-tang is delicious! Sam-gyeop-sal is pretty good too. Dining in Korea is always an "experience;" the food may be less-than-stellar, but with a group of good friends, the meal is really congenial. It's part of what we're here for isn't it? |

It's fun to eat, but it's also kind of boring, if that paradox makes sense. |
