Why do you want this? Because it's a big zoom, so you can finally take photos of Koreans, as you'll be far away hidden and they'll be none the wiser. It's also got a built-in image stabilizer so your drunken shaking hands won't get in the way of making great shots.

I bought this lens two years ago, and haven't used it in a over a year--so I figure it's time to sell it. It's obviously very clean, no scratches or even wear anywhere on the lens. Comes with a lens hood that works well to protect the lens when it's in your gear bag (hood has a couple light scuffs). You also get the 9-language instruction manual and both lens caps.

I also want to mention that this lens is one of the early models (late 2005) that was made in Japan. However, there was a recall from Canon, and that was the best thing ever--I took the lens in to Canon Korea and they rebuilt the whole thing by hand. It came back even more solid, with zero lens-creep, and very accurate focus. Consider it better than what you'd get off-the-shelf.

Anyway, price... Best price you'll find online in Korea is 590,000 won for the lens (but you're probably accustomed to getting raped for camera equipment down in Namdaemun), plus another 40,000 won for the hood.
As it is in mint condition, I'll offer it at 500,000 won, or best offer. One of these was recently sold used on US eBay for $455--and that was without the hood. And we all know everything costs more in Korea.

You've got until Tuesday to make the purchase. On Wednesday I'm flying back to the states for a visit and it will go on eBay. I live in Hongdae (that's in Seoul for your country folk) and you can come meet me here during the weekend. Otherwise you can meet me near the Coex Mall on Monday. I'm not shipping.

Despite this guy's bad attitude about us "fair-price regulators" (aka trolls) his quoted current retail price is correct (from Danawa).

Whether you think his stated asking price is fair for a used piece of equipment is totally up to you.

and that includes also believing that something 'recalled for repair' means 'better than new off the shelf'.

The troll above apparently isn't nuanced in the world of lenses. A new lens is no guarantee of quality. At the factory, all lenses are hastily put together. When this lens went back for service it was handled by a professional who rebuilt the lens and recalibrated it. Honestly, for a 70-300mm consumer-grade lens it is very nice. Take some test photos with it yourself and see.

FYI, the focus problem was caused by the inner barrel not fitting snug enough, so Canon re-developed the inner barrel and issued a very expensive recall to rebuild all these initial lenses. You can get an off-the-shelf mass-produced lens, or this professionally calibrated lens. The price is also in-line with used Canon lenses as they do hold a significant portion of their value.

Yes, I'm not nuanced in the world of lenses and apparently you're an expert in quality control.

I had a friend who worked in a Canon service center, and I can tell you that a 'professional' is someone who works in the back for 12 bucks an hour and wears a Canon golf shirt. I'm sure they had a team of technicians carefully testing and retesting your lens.

But obviously that doesn't match the quality of a off-the-shelf mass-produced lens, you know, those silly machines that produce professional and industrial quality glass. You know, the ones that come with a warranty when you buy them new.
