UK Shares See Biggest Slide For More Than Four Years

Billions of pounds have been wiped off the value of Britain's top shares - because of continuing worries about the economy on the other side of the Atlantic.

The FTSE 100 has fallen by more than 5% amid worries that the US may be heading for a recession.

It represents the biggest slide in at least the past four years.

How is a global recession good for Ron Paul? Wouldn't that prevent Canadians from funding his campaign?

And continuing today.....

Global stocks fall as U.S. recession fears grip

By Ian Chua Reuters - 52 minutes agoLONDON (Reuters) - Shares from Sydney to London sank for a second day on Tuesday, dragging commodity prices with them and promising a woeful start for Wall Street as investors dumped assets exposed to the risk of a global economic slowdown.

European stocks, while off early lows, were down more than 1 percent after Japan's benchmark Nikkei lost 5.7 percent -- the worst one-day loss since the session after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

George Bush strikes again.

Is there ANYTHING this guy has done right since he took office?

Surely he must be the worst president in U.S. history.

India has an interesting coping system:

"Bombay - trading on the Sensex was suspended, as automatic shutdowns were triggered by the speed and size of selling."

My prediction: global recession... Wink

Asian and European markets both plunged today. There was no trading in the U.S. because of the holiday for Martin Luther King, but futures trading indicates that it will also make a sizeable drop when it opens Tuesday.

One analyst I saw on CNN predicts, based on past (and present) indicators, that it may go further down, then rebound to recover about 75% of its recent losses, then remain volatile though 2008 ...

A European analyst (with a German-sounding accent) thinks that many people are panic-selling even good stocks just to get off the wild ride till it stabilizes some...

Interest rates were just cut by 3/4, the largest cut since 1991. Stocks plummeted again because of it.

It's long overdue, it's just finally all beginning right now.

"This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itselfnameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory."

You aren't kidding! I've got an ill feeling that the return of 'all your monies belong to us' tax and spend liberals are right around the corner.

I've got to make like a Kennedy and stuff what little money I've got into a tax haven like fiji. Razz

Actually I've been paying very close attention to Charlie Rangel's(D-NY), chairman of the House Way and Means committee, trillion dollar tax increase.

You can go here and see that it is Republicans trying to prevent tax increases and democrats are the ones who actually love to increase taxes. (Oh yeah, but some dems, such as the Kennedys, are above paying taxes. Rolling Eyes)
