Hello! I am quite new here to Korea. I live in Daegu and was wondering if anyone has any information on being able to volunteer anywhere?! I am teaching (obviously) and am trying to somewhat plan or prepare for my future when I move back home (masters, physiotherapy, medschool etc etc). I will need volunteer hours and since I am contracted here for a year I figure I may as well look into some volunteer work as well:) Preferably in the health profession (therapy, medicine, etc etc)
If anyone can help it will be much appreciated:)
If not.... thanks for reading!!! |

Before you any volunteer work, you need to contact a local immigration office and ask if you need to register (if you are on an E-series visa). Last year, volunteers were told to register and pay a fee of 60,000 here:
http://www.immigration.go.kr/HP/IMM80/imm_04/imm_0404/sm9.jsp
This year, there are people saying immigration said not to register and it is unnecessary.
Try the crappy search key and see if you can find some of the old volunteering discussions.
Good luck finding Koreans who want a foreigner, much less ones in the medical field. |

I think the legal risks involved in volunteering are exagerated. I'd go for it. Honestly, if the Korean immigration service ever decides to crackfown on legitiamate volunteers I think they would make the country an international laughing stock. I have the feeling the immigration officials turn a blind eye on volunteering activities. |

They don't have enough manpower to enforce their rules, not private tutoring on an E-2 visa and much less for a illegal volunteering.
But still, the letter of the law on E-2 visas doesn't not permit for volunteering without registering. Recently, immigration has said registering is not necessary. I'd recommend simply making the phone call, getting info from the horse's mouth and being in the clear.
Despite a lack of resources, all it takes is one pissed off Korean, or expat, to become an informant. Then they focus their limited resources. |
