I think the assessment criteria were a bit weird though. New Zealand is ranked 7th but the Netherlands is ranked 55th (4 behind Korea!).
The Netherlands is far ahead of New Zealand in terms of recycling, public transport, energy efficiency and so on. New Zealand has some progressive green policies but the basically our Clean Green '100% Pure' image is a marketing myth. The only reason NZ hasn't completely screwed up its natural environment is that we have about 4 million people in a country nearly three times the size of South Korea.
I'm pretty critical of a lot of things in Korea from a green perspective (overpackaged good, overheated buildings, LMB's obsession with digging up and concreting over what remains of the Korean countryside etc), but I can't help but think that the EPI assesses a lot of things that are beyond Korea's control. |

If you click on each individual country, they give a breakdown of the score. For example:
Policy Categories:
Air Pollution (Humans)
Air Pollution (Ecosystem)
Biodiversity and Habitat
(and so on)
And if you go to their Methodology section, they explain how their calculations and also talk about Missing Data.

Thanks for the suggestion Trollbait. Interesting to see that for the Biodiversity and Habitat catagory NZ has 61.9 and Korea has just 11.9
I'm surprised that SK still 'beats' NZ on greenhouse gases emissions per capita. With all its heavy industry and manufacturing I knew Korea's greenhouse gas emissions were high, but I thought NZ actually made proportionately greater emissions (in the form of methane) on account of all our sheep and cows. |
