Move over Korea Sparkling.

When I was getting off the subway tonight (line 3), I looked up and saw an English ad boasting "Let's make Seoul of global city!" I quickly wrote it down so I'd remember the wording, and also "Seoul Global Center," apparently the organisation responsible for this mess. There was a lot more English, and what looked like testimonies of some kind by foreigners who lacked the integrity to point out the glaring errors in the ad. I'll look for it tomorrow on the subway and try to get a picture.

Here's some information about the Seoul Global Center.

I read in the Korea Times that most times the creator of these slogans were fully aware of the mistakes they made. They slogan was not meant to be in English, but made either in jest or in Konglish for Koreans to understand.

I think you looking at this from a western point of view.

I didn't get a chance to read the whole thing.

...But, it seems to be some sort of help center for foreigners, so the ads should be directed at us, not Koreans.

I think I saw a similar ad/poster at the bus stop...

It said something like this...

"Seoul - World Design Capital 2010"

Who knows what that means...

Koreans seem intent on making everything in Korea the capital of the world.........

Issues Korea needs to fix and that people need to be aware of before thinking Korea, even Seoul, is global:

-Inability to register as a non-Korean on websites, including travel website, making reservations online impossible
-Lack of police enforcement of driving laws
-Lack of police help and ongoing police discrimination against non-Koreans
-Restricted banking for foreigners

I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few more at the moment.

It hurts to see the korea bashing when I know I have some very kind and good Korean friends.

Then again...If I have a bad day I feel more like joining in.
Oh dear...

A few years ago I was helping a Korean business acquaintance by proofreading his work. He was working in advertising and he used to run prospective slogans for different companies past me to see which ones were best. I usually found out that the companies preferred slogans using Konglish, even though they were well aware that it was bad English. I suppose that it just sounded better to them. Korea Sparkling!!

I think that's fine and works well in Korea, but if Seoul does Seoul want to be a "global" city or a "Korean" city. A global city would stand on international standards.

Thus I read: "We carefully blend the supreme quality leaves and you can meet global standard cigarettes" on my cigarette pack. I haven't a clue what it means; I asked an advanced class what it meant and they didn't know either. Sad

You're missing the point. This advertisement is aimed at foreigners residing in Korea, particularly "desirable" foreigners such as investors. Do you think it's impressive to use crap English??

If Koreans want to use bad English amongst themselves, that's their problem and nobody really notices. However, when they advertise their ignorance to the world, that's just stupid, especially for a country so sensitive about their national image.
