Ok, I've been here for a month, I've basically gotten sort-of used to teaching, and now I got paid. So I'm looking for other way-guk-in to hang out with in Cheonan. I'm the only foreign teacher at my school and I haven't met anybody else. Let me know if you want to show a newbie around. |

Cheonana, huh? I'm in your situation but I know a few people to connect you with. Where do you work?...do you know the neighborhood? There's tons of foreigners meeting for soccer games and other things like that, so send me a PM, and we can discuss. |

Hammer,
Know C-town well, and Zyz is spot on...We'll show you about no worries.
There is a thriving non-Korean community in Cheonan...let us know your digits and will pick you up for a night out to meet the lots...
Shoosh,
Ryst |

Hi Zyzyfer - I have a quick question - when and where do people meet to play soccer? I have absolutely no experience and zero talent for the game, but it sounds like fun; I assume it's coed? |

Zyz playing football...not that I've gotta see!
Purr, as for when and where, we normally do it on university fields. There is a univ. in Asan that has turf, so it's prime.
If you're in Cheonan, pm me and I'll give you more details...

I dunno. I just know that a friend of a friend seems to go to 10 soccer games a day, and they're foreigner-based.
As for me playing any kind of sports, they be Kodak moments. |

Zed Rock across the main street from the bus terminal seems to be pretty popular. |

Any bars that are worth even walking into in Cheonan are all tucked into little places that you can't find easily. There's also NOTHING near the train station, so if you do some drinking here, you'll most like be at the bus station area, which is the new downtown. It's only a 15-minute walk between the two, if you're staying near the train station or something.
The biggest highlight for me downtown is the Yawoori movie theatre. I think it's comparable to those joints in Seoul; it's always rocking and has HOT popcorn! Very important.
Zed Rock has lost any worthiness that it might've once had; they've removed the cheap draft beers and you'll have to throw down at least 5,000 won to get anything. The only positive side is that the place has a Filipino band that you might be able to catch. They play a lot of trendy newer music. The bartender staff is cool, but the managers don't like foreigners much, so it's really gone downhill.
You'd be better off checking out Tombstone Flair Bar, if you're into the Flair Bar scene at all, or maybe Western Boy if you like your bars somewhere in between Korean and Western. There are a couple of straight-up Korean bars as well, which can be quite interesting to go to. I don't know names offhand, but the most famous one is above the Buy the Way across the street from Yawoori. These places can be a lot of fun, if you like soju.
If you're really brave, you can get a taxi and go to Ssangyongdong, and go to Bar 86(it's palyuk something or other in Korean). It's an old-school style bar, has all these ancient Korean relics hung up on the walls, and if you order a mid-sized pitcher, it's served to you in a huge old soju bottle from back in the day. It's a cool bar, but you do have to find anju, and again, it's kind of hard to give directions because taxi drivers might not know it by name and there aren't exactly a lot of famous landmarks other than apartment buildings in Cheonan. |

There's a WAAA bar (you know, the chain) if you start walking behind the bus terminal (Stella for 5,00 won Woohoo!). Actually that area behind the Arario gallery has some cracking restaurants (an absolutely belting raw fish place if you're into it) and a few good watering holes.
There is also an old-fashioned style Korean bar like Z descibed in Ssangyongdong, except its on the street behind and running perpendicular to Buy the Way. Good atmosphere, pretty cheap and usually good for meeting uni students.
Near the train station are actually a few good restaurants and a decent enough chicken hof (on the way to the market) that heaves on Fridays (no whities, only Koreans) where you can plow down the soju and practice your Korean. Come to think of, in the market itself is really good fun as a primer late afternoon/early evening. |

Nix that advice, as Zed Rock sucks test-a-klees...it was, however, once a hot-spot.
Zed Rock has changed managers, now a cheeky ass. No lax atmosphere, must purchase mad amounts of side dishes that are not cheap, and liqy prices have been raised much more than the avg. around about. In addition, band is crap, and nearly no clientel now...how they survive must be on the deep pockets of the twit of the owner (and everything else). About 2-3 months ago the non-Korean community 'boycotted' the establishment for (if I recall correctly) anti-round-eye sentiment....haven't been there since. Though, some jar heads do visit on weekends.
Most of the non-Korean community goes to Woolly and Boolly just on the other corner...
Anything else, PM me.
Shoosh,
Ryst |

Zyz and Ryst have pretty much said all I can say about Cheonan. The only other places I can recommend are Beer Cabin, and a place called Joo Jang Goon, or scary cave bar as it is affectionately known. If anyone else wants info pm me as well. I lived in Cheonan for a year, and practically still do. |

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I'll try the Woolly and Boolly. I'll be there on Thursday, around 8:30-9:00 if anyone is interested in joining me for a pint. I suppose it is a block or so behind the main street across from the terminal. That looked to be where stuff was when I was in town last week.

Yea. Cross the street, go down the side street that has Baskin Robbins on the corner, and about two blocks in you'll see Zed Rock. Laugh at this hellhole as you make a right around the "park", and I think it's just on the other side of said "park", about one block from Zed Rock.
I might show up there. Depends on how knackered I am. |
