I've flown from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to HCMC twice, back in 01 and 03. Short flights, about an hour max and I *think* I paid about $60 one way back then and arranged them in HCMC in the backpackers district a day or two ahead of time.
I know this is in NO WAY the norm, but the plane from Siem Reap to HCMC was a twin prop plane, kind that held maybe 30 people, and was probably the scariest flight I've ever been on. Full on thunder and lightning, tossing the plane around, making kamikaze WW2 dive bomb sounds and, I kid you not, the pilot actually came over the PA right before we "landed" in HCMC to apologize ahead of time because he was "unfamiliar with landing in fog".
I elected to take the bus from HCMC to Cambodia the next time, thinking what could be worse than that flight? Ended out in a van full of christians on a church group volunteer project singing gospel songs for 8 hours until our driver actually ran into a baguette vendors cart in some one horse Cambodian town near a ferry and had to literally bribe his way out with the police. |
