Anyone look into university jobs outside of Korea?
From what I can gather, the China ones pay much less than regular institutes in China.
Japan seems similar to Korea, but it's possible to earn even more money but you must be published and know some Japanese in addition to a MA in TESOL, Linguistics, Education, or English.
Middle East is less vacation time, but more benefits and such.
Any other things to add? |

I've been watching many job boards over the last few years and this is what I can share. It's slim pickins...
You can find university jobs outside Asia, but those jobs will almost invariably demand higher quals than a bachelor's degree. Most of them will announce on respected job boards like 'tesol.org', 'chronicle', etc.
Besides uni jobs in Asia and the Mid East (which are easy enough to find altho I would recommend tesolislamia.org), I have seen ads now and again for positions in the newly independent states, the former Yugoslavia, Northern Africa, and perhaps Europe, but those usually require EU passport.
I think that Mexico is one of the best options when it comes unis and they might accept lower quals but the permits are a pain. (Think apostille. In fact, where do you think the Koreans got the idea?) ITESM has branches all over the country, hires regularly, but the adverts are hard to find. Check their site for 'empleo' and then search for only 'docente extranjero' positions. But I've known of jobs which never appeared there or anywhere that I knew of.) ITESM jobs are generally highly sought after. I've seen a couple in the Sonoran desert which offered 30k!
One of the best kept secrets (unless you frequent the Mexico board) is the steadily expanding university system in the state of Oaxaca. These ads will appear only on free job boards (such as eslemployment). I've seen 4 or more ads in the last 5 months. A couple of them right on resort class beaches little south of Acapulco!!! No the pay is not anywhere near Korean uni pay or even ITESM, but it is a decent package if you figure in the bonus, get your pension back, etc. and consider the standard of living in rural vs. urban Mexico. I hope to be there someday...
Also, there is a Catholic university (Santos something??) in Guayaquil, Ecuador, which advertises every year or so and has a decent western salary, but that city is pinche loco!!
Oh! There's also been a steady stream of ads from a university in Micronesia (THE university of Micronesia??) on one of the sites - every semester it seems for 1-2 years. The pay is only 16-17k, but it must be a unique experience, eh? Why don't one of you lads go and check it out for me?? |

A 1000 dollars a month at Universitario del Pacifico in Jesus Maria in Lima, though you need to have legal status which I will have by this time next year!
Then back to Seoul or go to Japan... I'm lighting a cigar with my feet up as we speak! |

I guess it depends on what is important to you personally.
If you are after money, Saudi is it. Nowhere else can match the $$$.
If you are after quality of life, I've often thought that any of the 6 or so universities in Hong Kong would be quite good. Uni wages in HK would not be far below Korea.
If you are after an experience in a developing (but non-Asian) country, I would *absolutely* suggest trying a Russian university in Siberia (think Vladivostok or Yakutsk).
But the more of your life you invest in kimchi land, the harder it is to ever leave |

So true.
The years have been going by for me, and I continuously see all the same people around year after year seemingly with little intention of trying somewhere new anymore.
I'm off to Japan next.
But some of the other ideas on here are intriguing - Micronesia, Mexico, China, etc.
I don't think I'd like Saudi Arabia much, but I would be interested in UAE/Dubai. |

A regular poster here went over to China and taught at a uni. He was liked and treated very well.
The ones in Guangzhou had a very good rep back in 2003-2004. Maybe you'd like it over there for awhile. |

Wow! Were you able to successfully secure a university job there from overseas and with non-esl related masters?
I was kind of open to the idea of teaching in Japan when I finish my Masters, but the market there seems very saturated and the required credentials more stringent (MA is TESOL/Applied Linguistics plus publications).
Japan also seemed too organized, expensive, and sterile for my tastes. |

A buddy of mine with an MA, a load of publications, and a lot of experience in Korea took a position with a small university in Japan as a coordinator. He likes it, and the pay and work conditions are on par with what he had in Korea. |
