Apparently the mocking Hellos we get here are not restricted to Korea or even Asia. Looks like it happens in France as well. Fortunately the French teachers have enough sense to eventually chastise the kids for this.

To begin with, I took my daily barrage of Hellos yelled in comedy voices with good grace. Nearly four months on, I can barely manage a grimace as I am chased up the corridor by these infuriating salutations. Just as I was beginning to think I was getting wound up over nothing, one teacher chastised his class for mocking me one does not scream bonjour numerous times as a greeting, although I have seriously considered it in retaliation.

Sometimes I wear headphones everywhere I go, even if I'm not listening to music.

Yes, an MP3 player is a Korean must. Mine was on the fritz friday and had to listen to a kid scream across the the street, "YOU HAVE A VERY BIG HEAD!!!!" about 15 times. I could have killed Steve Jobs for selling me a product that failed me in my hour of need. Luckly the Ipod is back in working order and I can just turn up the volume next time.,

I've had kids give me the "Hello Mista" in just about every Asian country I've visited. Kids hanging out of trees - yelling "Hi Mista" - kids following me calling "Hi" etc.

Not a problem. Certainly not rascist. The locals say that the kids just want to be friendly - and are using the only English they know. Fine.

But I do have a problem with Korean kids pointing at me (and laughing out loud) on the subway. And I do have a problem with Korean adults just looking on - and not saying anything to these kids.

And I have an even bigger problem with the hateful, resentful stares the 40 + adjoshis give me on the subway. Thanks boys - you do ruin my day - and you do make me feel like an outsider - and unwelcome.

Personally, I prefer the Hi's to the stares.

Christ, you must have a head like a watermelon, if a Korean is giving you stick for it. I've never seen a place with so many massive heads - except for parts of the English countryside, but that's a different story altogether.

If there is one question people ought to ask themselves more often it is this: What are the chances the person that I am talking has heard what I'm about say a million f*cking times? I think anybody who is really tall will agree with me.

I was in a grocery store and there was a bunch of adjosshis loitering around the counter. And one of them was selling strawberries, so he starts making his pitch at me in broken english. And they start talking about the best thing to say, and wondering aloud where I'm from and so on. And boy, are they laughing it up. And I can't really get mad at them because for them, it's this new, fun thing that still has its novelty value. And if I had just gotten here a week ago, I'd probably think it was fun too. I might have even taught them the best thing to say it and done a lot of laughing and handshaking and bowing and speaking broken Korean. But having been here a while, the thought of doing that is incredibly tiresome. I have no f*cking desire to do a bunch of gladhanding with a group of chuckling adjosshis. So I just stood there in silence, hoping maybe they I was Russian or something. And then I left. But again, I can't realy get mad at them. All that laughing is not a form of mockery, although they do regard you as a novelty, which is not as good as being regarded as (gasp) a normal person.

yeah, i do that now too. in fact, i feel really vulnerable if i forget them at home Very Happy , and usually go back for them unless i'm late.
i used to be really friendly in the beginning (one korean person told me i was one of the friendliest foreigners he's ever met), but after all the pointing, staring, mocking "hello"s, "foreigner"s, "russian"s, random picture taking, screw it: headphones all the time, even in the public washroom.

if i can hear a kid say a genuine hello, how are u, then i'll smile and respond and walk on, but it doesn't happen very often to me.
i may have to invest in a new mp3 player soon...mine is getting seriously worn out! Wink

Well to be fair you do have to squint to see their dongs because they are so small. So maybe some dental floss would do the trick.

This is completely off-topic, but WHAT IS IT with American/Canadian/English blokes and their obsession with *beep* size? And what are you doing staring at other guys' penises anyway?

The comment wasn't directed at you, but at "shaunew".
