I read in the paper today that starting in 2007 the horrid system of using ֹεϹȣ's to sign up for services on the internet will be replaced. There was nothing there specifically about foreigners but it looks like it'll work for us too. Here it is in Korean:

Quote:
ֹιȣ ͳ Ѵ
 ü 5 ù

 ͳݿ ֹεϹȣ ü Եȴ.

źδ 31 ͳ Ʈ ȸ ֹεϹȣ Է ħ ȴٴ ֹεϹȣ 5 ü ⿡ ù 2007Ⲳ ȭ ϰڴٰ .

5 ü ߱ ֹιȣ(ѱſ), (ѱ), Ű(ѱſ), ̿ڹȣ(ID) 񽺡(ſ), ׸ư(ѱ) ̴.

Basically it says that it will be replaced with five methods (you use just one): one based on your credit, something to do with your business registration number, an individual recognition key, an individual user number, or a 'green button', whatever that is. I assume it means that we'll be able to submit some information like a passport and whatnot, get an individual id card and then use the internet like everybody else.

I heard about it too, except in English, that the government is trying to make a way to fool-proof the method of signing up for some services on the Korean net.

Too bad it doesn't help us foreigners much though Crying or Very sad

Maybe I've just seen too many dog & pony shows, but here's my guess: Of those five new "alternative" numbers that Mith quotes, most/all will require a person to produce, at some point in obtaining those numbers, their (Koreans-only) Citizen's ID Number. Hence, instead of being stymied at the log-in page of a Koeran website, foreigners will now be stymied an hour or such into the process of obtaining their "alternative" number. And just as before, just as always, access will require that you provide a number that only Koreans can legally possess. All roads lead to Rome. But cheer up. I have it on good authority that Korea is fast at work on a foreigner-friendly system for accessing those websites, and it should be ready no later than 2014.

Just a cautionary note: While we are waiting for the change that may well turn out to be just like the Guru says (he didn't get that name from a Cracker Jack box)...it would behoove you to keep track of your old ARC number when you change jobs.

I had to get a replacement for my Korail card this weekend. They had trouble finding me because I was under one of my old numbers. It hadn't occured to me that each time I get a new card with a new job and apply for things that require a number, I'm under a different number. Not the best way to organize things, is it? Fortunately, the young lady behind the counter at the Dongdaegu Train Station was a resourceful young lady and spent some time searching for me in the computer and found my old registration.

I agree but I think you are overly optimistic - 2014 is rather soon - I would expect it to be closer to when pigs fly

Wow! At least they are trying to do something before I reach 40...

Foreign friendly websites in Korea? Ain't that a contradiction of terms?

The day they make those nifty shopping sites in English and usable for debit cards, then life in Korea could become heaven Very Happy

I've had the same ARC number since 2001, I guess they know me at immigrations (for better or for worse... Rolling Eyes )[/quote]
