Yet another way to save money.
Korea will yet again stumble blindly into a wall and realize that their new legislation and ESL plan is going to backfire miserably. |

I think it is so they can continue to be rude to us and call us foreign teachers instead of native speaking teachers. |

Now that the previous background checks have been installed, will the honest 'whiteys' need to start minding their P's & Q's or will whiteys still be in high demand by mom and pop hagwon owner?
Validity of the article aside, anyone here when these actions will become law? |

They'll be about as in demand as gyopos. Nothing for most whities to worry about.
Not that that's ok, that is..... |

If you watch such posts closely, you will find there is a certain agenda by a certain group of people (a few of which are married to filipinas) who are doing their best to sell Koreans on this idea through making up their own stories and posting them everywhere. Their hope is to scare up enough talk about it to actually make it a viable issue. Create enough smoke to make people believe there is a fire.
Some involved in hagwons and recruiting have taken up the issue in the hopes of dashing current talk of demanding higher pay due to the growing teacher shortage. |

I believe it.
However, it doesn't change the fact that Koreans do not want gyopos or even black americans teaching their kids at a hagwon (at least not at the same pay rate as a N. American).
It's sad, but true. The truth is that a lot of Koreans do not even want the Irish, the Aussies or the New Zealanders to teach their kids. I've tried more than two or three times to get a british sub for a class or two of mine and the hagwon mom or the mom wouldn't take them because of their "accent".
Bring on the Phillipinos. I hope they can get some work. |

There are four main forces at work attempting to grow this rumor:
1. Foreign teachers hoping to help their filipina wives find a job other than cleaning toilets.
2. Scared Hagwon owners and recruiters desperately hoping to find a way to keep wages from going up.
3. Disgruntled non-whites who want to take out their frustrations on those who are hired before them by creating false rumors and seeking to get them in print.
4. Non-teachers working in Korea who are just looking to get a rise out of making teachers panic.
As has been said -- Koreans don't even want Gyopos and whites from Ireland, South Africa, etc., from teaching their kids. It's been a hard sell at many schools (not all) for years. Be it wrong or wrong, it's just the truth.
Think about this before you buy into the attempted hype that Korean mothers will accept teachers from the Phils or Pakistan on a large scale anytime soon. |

I think this is hilarious. If it all goes down, there are going to be some teachers that'll make you ROTFLYAS. If I ever work at a hagwon again, or wherever, I hope some guy from India is hired where I work so I can have a good laugh.
In worked with some 56-year old guy over 2 years ago who had a Canadian passport. He was definitely not born in Canada. His fcking English was terrible and he sometimes didn't answer me when I spoke to him because he didn't understand what I said. I exchanged e-mails with him a couple of times after he took off and the English was atrocious. I replied to him once telling him it was a damned joke and a miracle that he was teaching English and he should thank his lucky stars that he ever got the opportunity and cash to. I outright offended him and his reply wasn't very nice. But geez. Come on. If some guy with a Canadian passport was this piss poor in English (I'm pretty sure his real name was Mohammed something or other and he was born in Iran - he proclaimed his mother was French and his father was Italian - yeah, right) guess what kind of product they're going to get from India and the. It ain't gonna be pretty, but it's gonna be pretty funny.
Ha! Indians teaching English. Yeah. They're all going to be qualified. Whatever. I say bring it on, though. Who cares? I don't know if it'll hurt at all for Korea. Not every Korean has to be perfect in English. The ones that do can find someone that's qualified enough. It's just that it'll be damned funny.
If this happens, there'll be some real jokers coming to teach English. |

I'm not big on knocking people from these countries for their English. That's wrong. I have known those from the Phils and India who speak excellent English.
After living several years here, I can tell you that I have an inkling of what Korean parents want (be it wrong or wrong) in regards to English education for their children.
Korea is a solid 10 to 20 years away from accepting this agenda on a broad scale (successfully). |

Nah. There'll be 99% jokers from those countries coming to teach English. Doesn't matter who you've met. |

This makes things a little bit interesting.
I think it may mean that President Lee is more serious about his English education plan than he led on.
I have no problem with the presence of qualified people from non-native countries just as long as they can do the job and be paid the same rate as me.
If I out they're not getting paid the same rate...I'm not gonna be a happy camper. |

What you're going to get though are teachers who sound like blithering idiots when they try to speak English. Really. If it happens it's really going to be a big joke. |

No doubt there are many Korean who will not be satisfied with teachers from the Philippines. On the other hand, there are already large numbers of Koreans who go to the Philippines for English education , including public school teachers sent and paid for by the dept. of Education, as well as younger students, quite a few whom I have met, including my wife's 13 year old niece. Of course the large numbers willing to accept teachers from the Philippines may be a bit short of what you think is large scale acceptance, but whether it is large or medium scale, they will find jobs if they are allowed. |
