Who watches this show on Fox?
I have to admit when I first saw it, I thought it was a reprehensible idea for a TV show. Some woman makes money claiming to be psychic, so they make a fictional TV show in which the fictional her actually is psychic. That said, I really enjoy the show. It's imaginative.
Who else? |

I can't stand that woman or her boyfriend on the show. Both are half-rate actors. She's always got no emotion and I wish a ghost would just push her off a bridge or set her house on fire and lock the doors. |

Are you talking about 'Medium'? If so - I admit to being fairly well hooked on it. |

Medium? We're not talking shirt sizes here. We're talking ghost and crime. |

Did you hear about the psychic midget who escaped from prison?
The police are looking for a small medium at large. |

I think Medium is the correct English title, isn't it?
It's a good show, but I really hated the death penalty episode they showed a while back. The psychic's lack of concern when observing an execution totally rang false to me even if it did turn out to be fake. Shes the main character, and shes supposed to be sensitive. How is the audience supposed to relate to a leading lady who tags along on an execution and calmly talks about how the guy must have had no soul? Even if she hadnt been psychic, that scene would have fallen flat. The fact of her gift made matters worse.
Overall, I found the other characters in that episode unconvincing, and the plot came across as kind of stupid. It would have been much more interesting if they had arrested the neighbour and sentenced her to death for killing the cop who raped her Thats what I thought would happen, but instead the neighbour just skipped town and took her son with her. Not much of an ending.

Oh well, I guess entertainment isn't what it used to be ... |
The only thing she did accurate was not bringing marshmallows and weenies.
"DuBois stated in the January 9, 2005 TV Guide that she initially thought Arquette was too liberal to play her, remarking, "I mean, I have a gun, I have put people on death row. I wanted to make sure that was something that didn't bother her. But she assured me that she believed some people may have that coming."" |

I didn't know the background. But the performance, and the episode as a whole, just didn't come across as very convincing to me, even if the character was based on a real person. Maybe if they had developed that aspect of her character in more depth prior to the show, it would have worked. Or maybe a better plotand some sort of explanation of the character's beliefs early on in the showmight have saved the day. But as the story played out, it just didn't work.
Sorry, I don't get the bold part. You mean the real person who inspired the character would have done that?

The real Alison Dubois is very pro-death-penalty, that's all.
You're right though, the show hasn't built her fictional character in quite the right direction to have her suddenly witness an execution (faked or not) without feeling anything. |

I didn't even know there was a real Allison DuBois ... I just started watching the show recently, when it took over the SVU time slot. I'm sure I've missed a lot of episodes that would have given me more insight into the character, but that episode really struck me as silly on many levels.
Oh well ... TV was more of an art form in the old days, I suppose.

That's what I dislike about the show, that it's basically a fictional retelling of a real person who claims to have psychic powers. It's as morally responsible as making a show about me where my semen can cure cancer.

I think it could still be good entertainment, regardless of how you feel about psychics. The death penalty episode could have kicked ass too, regardless of how viewers felt about the death penalty ... but it didn't. It's not really about social responsibility so much as uninspired acting and writing. |
