So which is correct?

She runs fastest in her school.

She runs the fastest in her school.

The reason that "She runs the fastest in her school" sounds natural, is because of the sentence "She is the fastest runner in her school." The is used as a definite article, because "the fastest runner <in her school>" is a definite description...it can only describe one person. However, "the fastest" is describing the subject of the sentence, and since the subject is already definitely described...I would drop the "the", and make the sentence "She runs fastest in her school".

I still prefer "She is the fastest runner in her school," but it's not the only way to go.
