I was looking for some inspiration for current event topics on the internet at work last week when I was stoppped dead in my tracks. We have this Cleanpass filter which stops the kids getting at undesirable content such as free game sites. This is fantastic, of course, except when I want to play Crazy Taxi at lunchtime.

Last week, however, I was stunned when I tried to get onto The Guardian website and the little red man popped up and wagged his finger at me. Why am I not allowed to visit the website of a major British national broadsheet newspaper? Is it just a mistake or could it be deliberate? I know The Guardian leans decidedly towards the left but its a major national newspaper ffs.

So now I'm wondering how these things work.

Who chooses to block a website?
Is it centrally controlled or is it all down to my principal?
Do you have a filter like this at your school?
Have you been inexplicably denied access to anything?

A lot of filtering software permits you to add any site you like to the main filter as a blocked site. Try adding the school's home page sometime. That'll get the school's Net Administrator off his duff.

Just set up a proxy server to fix that.

OK thanks for that advice. I was aware these things are fairly easy to get around. Thats not the point of my post though.

Why would a news site be blocked?
Who would have made that decision?
