|
|
I'm looking for an external dvd r/rw. In the states, I bought an external cd r/rw because the drive in my laptop crapped out and I couldn't get it replaced. I'm wondering if there's a dvd version and if so where I could find one at and how much it would be roughly. I have a bunch of video files that I need to pull of the comp but they are too big for cd-rs ...699-900 MB.
The reason I need an external burner is that my laptop doesn't have one built in just a plain cd-r/rw. If an external burner isn't possible any other suggestions for how I can get the files off my comp but still have access to them. I'm not the most tech savvie person, I have a zip program but I'm not exactly sure how to use it. I've tried with other files and it didn't seem to really compress the data it pretty much only changed the icon.
Thanks. |

i recommend this place. prices are decent and they don't charge foreigner tax. The prices you see on their website is the same as their store in yongsan. |

Thanks I looked at that site, but what do all the numbers mean besides writing speed? What's the best for the least money? Also quite a few of those (most of them really) are internals. As far as I could tell, and correct me if I'm wrong, there wasn't that many externals.
As I said I'm not very tech savvie, that's why I had friends that were computer people back home. |

there actually aren't that many externals anywhere you go, because most computers already have dvd burners included already.
if you go to Danawa (google of electronics in korea ) there are about the same amount of selection:
http://pc.danawa.com/price.html?defSite=PC&cate1=861&cate2=878
but the site i mentioned has cheaper external drives. I would recommend this one as LG burners are high quality and this one has all the bells and whistles:

edit: if you want dual layer burning you will have to go with another drive. but dual layer dvds are pretty expensive to buy compared to single layer.
here is a link for cheap blank dvds:
http://www.ezguide.co.kr/shop/cate_s.html?cid=1763
*don't buy blank dvds from the street vendors in yongsan or emart/homeplus as they will charge an arm and a leg.

Ok thanks for the options, but another question....dual layer? single layer? What's the difference?
This will give me something to go to the vendors with, when I manage to get to Yongsan/Technomart. |

dual layer burns the data onto 2 layers (as the name implies) thus resulting in almost double the capacity than the single layer.
dual layer can hold up to 8.5Gb compared to 4.7Gb. If you buy dvd movies they come in a dvd5 or dvd9. dvd5 will fit onto a single layer dvd, and dvd9 will only fit onto the dual layer disc.
one major deterrent for dual layer burners is the cost of the blank dvd media. cheapest dual layer blank media will start at 3000 won for one, 20000 won for 10. single layer blank media are way cheaper. you can buy 50 starting around 11,000+ won. |

Thanks again. I don't think I'll go for the dual layer option as I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible.
You have given me a starting point and something that will let me walk into the Techie stores without looking like I have the word "sucker" tattooed on my forehead or the deer caught in the headlights look.

I went looking for it once...one of the cops there tried to show me where it was but I have a horrible sense of direction so I just gave up and went to I-park. |

Walk out of the door to Yongsan station.
turn right
walk to the end of the plaza - you will be looking over the rail yard.
If you are at e-mart you went the wrong way.
The blue building you see it the old terminal building. To the right of that you will see another building with a large sign "Gigabyte" - that is the Son-in plaza. They are your best bets for getting the cheapest prices for hardware.
You get to them by taking the pedestrian walkway over the rail yard.
You can get an internal DVD-RW drive and put it into an external case for about 60-70k won. Plugs into your USB drive and has it's own power supply.

I bought an external DVD burner for my laptop in Yongsan. It's a Sony--which seemed to be the best deal. It even has Firewire (iLink) and works with my Mac. It was around 100 bucks. |
