I've been offerd a job at YBM-Sisa.....Yeoksam branch. Anyone have any experience there, or knowledge about YBM? They offered split shifts to begin with (yech!!) but that'll change eventually. And they don't offer housing (they only give key money). Is that typical of the large schools that teach adults?

From my experience , the only people who like YBM-SISA-ECC ,are the ones who dont realise that they ve been screwed. If you really look at any of those contracts , they are awful. You are surely asking for problems if you work for them.

As I understand Yeoksam is ELS not ECC ... meaning adults not kids. So that is a different ball game to a typical haggie.

I worked for YBM for 1 year (before moving on to another school) and there were moments of great fun and also weeks and weeks of endless blandness. Confused

YBM is such a mixed bag - some are "company-owned" others franchised (like say McDonalds). Some YBM's are well run, others totally hopeless. Yeoksam is in a $$$ area, but language schools are a dime a dozen in Gangnam, so it is also a lot of pressure to retain students.

YBM ELS regularly do not provide accommodation in their contracts and split shifts are common. Really need to speak to them and do your research before signing.

Only with ECC are you at risk of working for a franchise. All the ELS schools are under YBM. ELS Yeoksam, if I remember correctly, is still under the general direction of Hannah Yoo, who runs things fairly for the teachers. Salaries are not great, housing is not provided (but they give you 10 million key money interest-free, which is not bad), but it's safe, you teach adults, and you're in the center of things Seoul-wise. Infinitely better than making 200-300,000 more per month to work in some crappy little bedroom community teaching screaming hellions.

I dont get it. A few years ago , anybody with more then a years experience wouldnt go near an ECC / YMB. ECC /YBM would hire anyone ,with a years' or more experience , on the spot!
Now for some reason its viewed as an ok company. It seems to be up there with PAGODA and CDI.
However , I havent really seen or heard of any great changes with ECC /YBM.
If u really look at the contracts , they suck
the company maybe promoting its self as changed , but its all BS.
Stay away!

I've heard from others that thier outsourcing division is one of the most worthless, unscrupulous, and greedy group of people you could ever deal with.

Things may have changed, but as mentioned above, this franchise has not has a good reputation on this board over the years.

Stay away from the YBMs that do not include accommodations. There are better chains out there that pay more, give you less hours and throw in a decent studio.

Ya so you have to be there from 9am to 4:30pm but you only actually work half of that time. Plus having to sit in the classroom as the other teacher does their job - no way. Having to eat with the kids - no way. They don't really pay an experienced teacher what they are worth, the holidays suck, even if you have your own house, they still hit ya for a 600k "deposit" - and the worst thing of all is their contracts are inflexible. They use the standard crap for everyone...

I don't want to totally trash the job, as if you are new and don't have your own house I am sure the job is a good "first" job...they do give you an apartment, relocation allowance, and airfare.

However, for people beyond their first year...their are way better paying gigs out there for less work/restrictions.

YBM's adult program does not give you an apt. Just key money. Strictly for the newbie with no internet access at home., ie., no research.

i hear what u are saying, but can u name some schools that u recommend? cause i really don't think there are that many options for teaching adults.
