I know the discussion is going on regarding public vs. private schools, but how about universities? I'm presently considering job offers from two universities - one is a national university, the other is not. Should I be more leery about what the folks at the private university tell me? Or are they all pretty much the same at the university level?

The big difference you are going to encounter involves pension. Private unis are on a private pension fund which requires you work there something like 5 years to become fully-vested. National universities are on the national pension plan (I think). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

National is better.

Depends on the uni. My uni is private but uses the National Pension scheme. Mine might be exceptional though.

The OP should check out working conditions at both unis and talk to people currently working there to decide which job to take. I don't think it's a case of national vs private, it's more a case of some unis, both private and national, are good to work for and some are not.

Issues such as scheduling (block schedule over 3 or 4 days? Random schedule over 5 days?), co-workers, types of classes you'll be teaching, paperwork required, vacation work required, good/bad/non-existant supervisors etc. are much more important issues than whether it is national or private.

I don't know any public/national universitiy jobs that pay as well as the best private university jobs out there.

It'll come down to your degree level, your experience, and your personal preferences. If you are highly qualified and experienced, avoid the public universities. If you want housing, look around for the best housing deal you can get, etc...
